Robert Chang Built Element Wheels on a Single Frustration: Nobody in the Wheel Industry Actually Knew Fitment

Twenty-three years after founding Element Wheels, Robert Chang still spends time on the shop floor with a feeler gauge. He measures the body clearance behind a customer's bumper, the brake caliper depth, the gap between the wheel and the strut at full lock. "I do it because the data is the difference between getting fitment right and getting it close," he says. "Customers can tell the difference, even if they don't know exactly why."
That obsession is the foundation of a business based in Chandler, Arizona that has been BBB Accredited since 2009 with an A+ rating, was named to Newsweek's inaugural list of America's Best Companies for Customer Service in 2019, and carries a 4.34 out of 5 average across more than 217 verified customer reviews. None of that is what Robert leads with. He leads with the data.
From Consulting to Wheels
Before Element Wheels, Robert spent the years after his 2000 graduation from Arizona State University as a consultant at Deloitte Consulting in their e-business division. The work helped legacy companies, particularly government entities, integrate their processes onto the web. It was the right experience for what came next. It was also, for Robert, the wrong career. "I wasn't connecting with clients on the level I wanted," he says. "I wanted to build something that put customers first."
What he saw in the wheel and tire market in 2003 was a gap nobody had solved. There wasn't a retailer with a website that did a genuinely good job of finding wheels and tires by vehicle search. The harder problem, getting staggered wheel and tire setups right, was something the industry had simply ignored. Robert still believes Element Wheels is the only retailer with a search tool that handles staggered fitment correctly.
He had also been a car enthusiast since childhood. His first car was a 1995 Honda Accord sedan that he lowered by cutting the springs and rigged with his mother's home stereo system. "The ride was terrible," he says. "The seven other people I'd fit into that car didn't seem to care." Across the years before and since founding Element Wheels, Robert has cycled through a steady rotation of cars and trucks that traces the breadth of the enthusiast world. The rotation runs from a Geo Prizm on 100-spoke roadsters and a 1997 Honda Prelude through a 1993 Mazda RX-7 and a 1995 Nissan 240SX, into an Acura NSX Zanardi Edition, a 2005 Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 with the gated manual, a 2012 Nissan GTR, and a 2015 Lamborghini Huracán, alongside a series of lifted trucks including a Toyota Tundra, a Silverado 2500, a GMC Sierra 2500, and a Ford F-250 Platinum.
The Empirical Fitment Methodology
After Element Wheels started selling wheels and tires, Robert noticed something unsettling about the industry. "Nobody seemed to actually know how fitment worked," he says. "When wheel manufacturers design a wheel, they engineer it for a subset of vehicles. The rest of the fitment is left up to trial and error."
That insight became Element Wheels' Empirical Fitment Methodology. The company physically measures as many vehicle platforms as it can: body clearance, brake caliper geometry, turning radius checks, backspace clearance with feeler gauges. The resulting data set is what powers every fitment recommendation Element Wheels makes. After more than 20 years running the company, Robert is still personally measuring vehicles.

Element Forged
In 2025, after two decades of gathering that fitment data, Element Wheels launched its own forged wheel brand, Element Forged. Robert frames it simply. "After 20 years of gathering fitment data, Element Forged was born." Most retailers do not offer a forged wheel brand of their own because they lack the fitment intelligence required to build the kinds of complex setups Element Forged makes possible. "The data is the moat," Robert says. "Element Forged is what we build on top of it."
The AI Visualizer
On April 24, 2026, Element Wheels launched an AI Visualizer that Robert built himself. He had grown frustrated with the industry's legacy tools. Those tools only show vehicles they have in their database, and only show wheels from manufacturers who pay to be in their catalog of images. "About 75% of existing wheel designs are not available on those tools at all," Robert says. The legacy visualizers also do not handle lifted or lowered vehicles, and they do not let you see how the wheel will actually sit on the car at different offsets, flush or sticking out.
The Element Wheels AI Visualizer is agnostic. It works on any vehicle, not just a fixed list of stored cars. Customers can use a stored vehicle reference or upload a photo of their own car, then see how a wheel will sit on it at different offsets, flush or with an aggressive poke, lifted or lowered. A slider lets the customer compare before and after side by side. The only constraint is on the wheel side, and the rule there is simple: as long as Element Wheels has the image of the wheel, the tool can render it. The Visualizer references the wheel image from the page the customer is browsing, which means it works on every wheel Element Wheels carries. "It removes the guesswork that has historically been the biggest reason customers hesitate on aftermarket wheels," Robert says.
How He Runs Element Wheels
Robert's operating principle is simple. "Customers should always feel taken care of, and they should always get honest information from us," he says. "Sometimes I go out of my way to a fault to get the data needed for a customer to have the right experience. Obsessing over fitment is the only way I know how to do this work."
That principle has held for 23 years. The Newsweek recognition, the BBB rating, and the customer reviews are the byproducts of that obsession, not the goal of it. Robert's bet is that customers can tell the difference between a retailer who measures and a retailer who guesses, and that those customers will keep coming back.
