Mini Cooper Aftermarket Wheel Fitment

The Mini Cooper is the compact premium hatchback built by BMW since 2001. Element Wheels measures fitment across the Cooper nameplate from the R-platform Cooper and Cooper S (2002-2006 and 2007-2015 Coupe and Convertible) through the current F-platform Cooper Hardtop, Cooper S, John Cooper Works, and Cooper SE Electric. The single most important Cooper fitment fact is the bolt pattern change at the F-platform transition. The R-platform cars ran 4x100 with a 56.1mm hub bore. The F-platform cars moved to 5x112 with a 66.56mm hub bore to match BMW's standard small-platform spec. A wheel built for an R-series Cooper will not bolt onto an F-series Cooper. The F-platform also added the John Cooper Works trim with factory Brembo brakes that take a bigger front caliper. Find your generation below and the fitment specs follow. The Mini Cooper Bolt Pattern Changed at the F-Platform

The R-platform Cooper (R50, R52, R53 from 2002-2006, then R55, R56, R57 Coupe and Convertible through 2015) ran 4x100 with a 56.1mm hub bore. That is the same 4x100 pattern as the Volkswagen Golf Mk4, the Honda Civic of the same era, and a lot of compact platforms. The Cooper's wheels are not interchangeable with those cars, but the bolt pattern matches. When BMW introduced the F-platform Mini Cooper Hardtop for the 2014 model year, the bolt pattern moved to 5x112 with a 66.56mm hub bore. That is the BMW small-platform standard, shared with the F-series 1-series, 2-series, X1, X2, and the F-series Mini Clubman and Countryman of the same era. The lug count went from four to five, the hub bore went from 56.1mm to 66.56mm, and the wheels do not bolt across that transition under any circumstances.

A point of confusion that comes up at the F-platform transition: the Cooper Convertible (R57) stayed on the R-platform 4x100 spec through model year 2015 alongside the early F56 Hardtop on 5x112. Two Coopers on the lot in 2014 and 2015 could have different bolt patterns. The 2014-2015 F56 Hardtop is on 5x112. The 2014-2015 R57 Coupe and Convertible are on 4x100. Why the John Cooper Works Brake Package Changes the Wheel Window

The F-platform Cooper John Cooper Works (JCW) ships with a factory Brembo brake package, made for Mini by Brembo. The front caliper is a 4-piston fixed unit clamping a 335mm rotor. The rear runs a single-piston floating caliper. That front brake is physically larger than the brake on the base Cooper and the Cooper S, and it takes more inner clearance behind the wheel face. The brake package change is normal for the JCW trim and is normal for performance variants generally. The front axle does the majority of the braking work and the front brake scales up accordingly. The practical fitment effect is that some wheels that clear a base F56 Cooper will not clear the JCW Brembo, and the JCW minimum diameter is one step larger than the base car's minimum diameter.

How We Confirm Fitment on Mini Cooper Wheels

For the Cooper that means clearance from the wheel to the fender (the Cooper's fender flares are tighter than most platforms because of the car's short overhang), gap between the back of the wheel and the suspension, brake caliper height (base vs Brembo on the F-platform JCW), hub bore fit, and turning radius clearance. At our fitment facility in Chandler, Arizona, the Element Wheels team measures directly on the physical platforms we support. We don't pull specs from manufacturer sheets the way most retailers do.
