Bronze Wheels & Rims

Bronze has quietly become one of the most requested finishes we sell, and it is not a fad. It started in the tuner and JDM scene years ago and has only kept growing, spreading into off-road trucks and luxury sports cars alike. We carry bronze wheels and rims in gloss, satin, matte, and brushed finishes. Nearly every brand we stock now makes a bronze, but a few of our favorites are Element Forged, Fuel Off-Road, and Black Rhino for trucks and off-road, and Vossen, Ferrada, Rohana, Variant, and Method Race Wheels for cars and performance builds.

Gloss vs Satin vs Matte vs Brushed Bronze

Gloss bronze has a high sheen and the most depth in the color. Brushed bronze has a fine grain texture in the metal that catches light differently. The satin and matte question is the same one we get on black, and here is the honest truth most sites will not tell you. Traditionally matte is flatter than satin, but in wheel manufacturing the two terms are basically interchangeable. One brand's matte can have more sheen than another brand's satin, because it really comes down to a gloss ratio that each brand names however it wants. It is not like house paint with fixed standards, so pick the look you want and do not get hung up on the label.

Do Bronze Wheels Show Brake Dust?

Same as any finish, the lower the sheen the better it hides dust. Matte and satin bronze hide brake dust better than gloss, because dust is flat and stands out more on a glossy surface. Either way, brake dust will show on any wheel if you do not keep it clean. If dust is a concern, go satin or matte, ask for low dust brake pads at your next brake service, and consider ceramic coating the wheels. Ceramic coating helps keep brake dust, water spots, and road grime from sticking. One note: ceramic coating adds a little sheen to a matte or satin wheel, but it will not turn it fully glossy.

Are Bronze Wheels Durable?

Bronze wheels are generally very durable, but like anything, paint quality varies from one company to the next. The safest bet is to stick with brand name wheels that have a track record of quality. Higher dollar wheels generally use better paint that lasts longer and holds its color. A few high end brands go a step further and powder coat their finishes for the ultimate in durability, like Vossen's bespoke program and the full Variant lineup. If long term durability is your top priority, powder coat is the toughest option.

How to Repair a Curbed or Scratched Bronze Wheel

Gloss bronze is the most forgiving to repair. For a light scratch, you can color sand and buff it just like a car's paint, and there is a good chance it comes right out. For a deeper curb, touch it up with a little enamel model paint or matching spray paint. If the damage is rough, sand or file the rough spot smooth first, then touch it up. The catch with bronze is matching the exact shade, since bronze varies brand to brand, so test your match on a hidden area first.

A trick worth knowing: keep a cloth and some alcohol handy. While the enamel paint is still wet, a cloth with alcohol wipes it right off, so if you make a mistake or do not like how it looks, you get a clean do over. There are also wheel repair services in most areas if you would rather hand it off. As a general rule, you can touch up or refinish a wheel without replacing it, as long as it is not bent or cracked. We do not recommend repairing a bent or cracked wheel, because at that point it has lost structural integrity and that is a safety issue, not a cosmetic one.

How to Care for Matte and Satin Bronze Wheels

Matte and satin bronze need different care than gloss, and getting it wrong can ruin the finish. Do not use polishes or wax on matte or satin wheels. They can add shine and in some cases permanently damage the finish. We do not recommend any wax or polish on wheels in general, because there are so many formulas out there and some cause serious damage. The big one to never do: never use a polishing compound or buff a satin or matte wheel. It will turn that spot glossy and there is no undoing it. For regular cleaning, soap and water is all you need.
