What Staggered Wheels Are

Staggered wheels means the wheels on the back of the vehicle are a different size than the front. The most common staggered fitment is a wider wheel in the rear, such as a 19x8.5 up front and a 19x10 in the back. On some vehicles, such as the Acura NSX and the Chevrolet Corvette, the rear wheels are both wider and usually one inch larger in diameter.

The point is function and stance at once: a wider rear wheel carries a wider tire, which puts more rubber down where a rear wheel drive car needs it, and fills the rear arches the way factory performance models do. Element Wheels has specialized in custom and staggered fitments for over 20 years, and every staggered setup we sell is confirmed on your specific vehicle before it ships.

The Vehicles That Run Staggered

Staggered fitments live mostly on rear wheel drive platforms: the Ford Mustang, Dodge Charger, BMW 3 Series, Mercedes Benz E Class, Kia Stinger, Nissan 350Z and 370Z, the Infiniti G35, and most Porsche, Audi, and Volkswagen performance models. If the factory offered your car with a wider rear tire on any trim, a staggered aftermarket setup is usually straightforward.

Use Shop by Vehicle at the top of the page and we will show only the wheels confirmed for your car, or use the Staggered Sets Only filter on any listing page to cut the catalog down to staggered fitments.

Staggered on All Wheel Drive

It depends on the vehicle, but as a rule staggered setups are not recommended on all wheel drive. Most AWD systems are engineered around the same size wheel and tire at every corner, and mismatched rolling diameters can hurt performance and handling. That said, staggered fitments now come from the factory on high performance AWD cars like the Nissan GTR and Audi R8, and most modern vehicle computers can adjust for a small variance in rolling diameter between front and rear without harm.

Some AWD platforms are particularly sensitive to different front and rear tire sizes, including the E chassis BMW, many Infiniti models, and Tesla. If you drive one of these, talk to our fitment team before committing to a staggered setup. We will tell you plainly whether your car should run one.

Staggered on Front Wheel Drive

It depends on the car. Some front wheel drive cars have enough room in the rear for a wider wheel: the Acura TL is a classic example, and the Honda Accord takes a staggered setup cleanly from the 8th generation (2008) forward. On many other FWD cars, a truly wider rear wheel and tire needs fender modification.

If you want the staggered look without the clearance work, several wheel companies make a simulated staggered version: front and rear wheels share the same diameter and width, but the rear wheels set the spokes deeper into the barrel for a bigger lip, sometimes as much as 4 inches. You get the deep rear lip without changing the tire sizes.

How We Fit Staggered Setups

A staggered setup doubles the ways a fitment can go wrong: two different widths, two different offsets, and two different tire sizes all have to clear on the same car. At our fitment facility in Chandler, Arizona, the Element Wheels team measures on the physical platforms we support: clearance from the wheel to the fender, strut clearance, caliper height, hub bore, lug seat geometry, and turning clearance at full lock, front and rear separately.

We sell complete staggered wheel and tire packages, mounted and balanced, with tire sizes matched so the front and rear rolling diameters stay as close as the setup allows. Comparing a staggered setup against what is on your car today? Our Wheel and Tire Fitment Calculator shows the poke, tuck, and speedometer differences side by side. And every order is backed by our 100% Fitment Guarantee: if it does not fit, we pick up the wheels and refund the full amount.

We also carry staggered fitments from Avant Garde, Giovanna, Gianelle, Niche, TSW, and MRR.

Staggered Wheels FAQ

What are staggered wheels?

Staggered wheels are a setup where the rear wheels are a different size than the front, almost always wider. A common example is 19x8.5 front and 19x10 rear. Some cars, like the Corvette, also run one inch larger diameter in the rear.

Can I run staggered wheels on all wheel drive?

Generally it is not recommended, because most AWD systems expect the same rolling diameter at every corner. Factory staggered AWD cars like the Nissan GTR and Audi R8 are the exception, and most modern vehicle computers tolerate small variances. The E chassis BMW, many Infiniti models, and Tesla are particularly sensitive, so ask our fitment team about your specific car first.

Can I put staggered wheels on a front wheel drive car?

On some cars, yes: the Acura TL has the rear clearance for it, and the Honda Accord takes a staggered setup from the 8th generation (2008) forward. Many other FWD cars need fender modification for a truly wider rear. The alternative is a simulated staggered wheel: same size front and rear, with the rear spokes set deeper for a bigger lip, sometimes as much as 4 inches.

Do you sell staggered wheel and tire packages?

Yes. We build complete staggered wheel and tire packages, mounted and balanced, with front and rear tire sizes matched to keep rolling diameters as close as the setup allows. Every package is covered by our 100% Fitment Guarantee and free shipping on qualifying orders.

Can you rotate staggered tires?

Not front to back. When the front and rear sizes differ, the tires can only stay on their axle, so rotation is limited to side to side, and only with tires that are not directional. Plan on the rear tires wearing faster on a rear wheel drive car.

How do I know a staggered setup will fit my car?

Use Shop by Vehicle at the top of this page and we filter the catalog to setups confirmed for your car, front and rear measured separately. Every order is covered by our 100% Fitment Guarantee: if it does not fit, we pick the wheels up and refund the full amount.
