The Alfa Romeo 4C Bolt Pattern and Hub Bore

Every Alfa Romeo 4C from 2015 through 2020 runs 5x98 with a 58.1mm hub bore. 5x98 is the historic Alfa Romeo, Fiat, and Lancia pattern used on smaller Italian platforms. It is distinct from the 5x110 pattern used on the modern Giulia and Stelvio on the Giorgio platform. A wheel made for a Giulia will not bolt onto a 4C, and a wheel made for a Fiat 500 Abarth or older Alfa Romeo 147/156/GT will share the bolt pattern but is unlikely to match the 4C's offset window or fit the supercar's wheel diameter. 5x98 is also not the same as the common 5x100 pattern used on certain Volkswagen and Audi compacts, even though the numbers look close. Two millimeters of bolt-circle difference is a hard incompatibility, not a tolerance.

The 4C uses lug bolts (12x1.25) threaded directly into the hub, not studs and nuts. This is the European convention and Alfa Romeo follows it across the lineup. There is no fixed stud to pre align the wheel before tightening, so the centerbore does the centering job at speed. The 58.1mm hub bore is Alfa Romeo specific on this platform. Wheels with a larger centerbore than 58.1mm need hub centric rings to bring the bore down to the 4C hub diameter. Why the 4C Ships Staggered, and How the Brake Package Sets the Window

The 4C is a mid-engine, rear drive sports car. The engine and the transaxle sit behind the cockpit, which puts most of the weight over the rear axle. Alfa Romeo built the factory wheel package staggered: a narrower front wheel and tire and a wider rear, to put more contact patch where the power and the weight actually are. From the factory the 4C ran a 17x7 front and an 18x8 rear in the US market on the Spider trim, with the larger optional package stepping the rear to 19 inch. The aftermarket window we measure for the 4C accepts both staggered and square fitments depending on owner preference. Owners who want the most factory-faithful look stay staggered. Owners who want the option to rotate tires front to rear or to keep tire purchasing simpler can run square within the aftermarket diameter range we have validated.

The front brake is larger than the rear on the 4C. That is normal on a mid-engine sports car of this caliber. The front axle handles the majority of the braking load and Alfa Romeo scaled the front rotor and caliper accordingly. The front brake size is not a clearance constraint on most aftermarket designs in the 18 to 19 inch diameter window. Where the 4C does demand attention is the carbon fiber monocoque. The tub is the structure. Anything that touches the tub face during wheel installation is a permanent mark. Wheel installation needs to be done with the lift points and the jack pads Alfa Romeo specifies.
