The BMW 3 Series has run since 1975 across seven generations and two bolt-pattern transitions. The E30 (1984-1991) ran 4x100. The E36, E46, E90-E92, and F30 (1992-2018) ran 5x120. The G20 (2019 and up) moved to 5x112. M3 follows the same chassis bolt pattern in every era. The BMW 3 Series Bolt Pattern

The 3 Series has run three bolt patterns over its history. From 1984 through 1991 the E30 used 4x100 with a 57.1mm hub bore. From 1992 through 2018 the E36, E46, E90-E92, and F30 all ran 5x120 with a 72.56mm hub bore. From 2019 forward the G20 moved to 5x112 with a 66.56mm hub bore. M3 follows the same chassis pattern in every era.

Worth knowing: the 5x120 era is one of the most consistent bolt patterns in modern BMW history. An E46 wheel will bolt to an F30 in width and offset, and aftermarket wheels for one chassis often cross over to the next. The 2019 switch to 5x112 (the Volkswagen Group pattern) is the first real wheel cross-shop break. A G20 wheel does NOT fit an F30 and vice versa.

Why the Generation and Brake Package Matter

The 3 Series ran 5x120 for 26 years before the G20 broke continuity in 2019. The E36 and E46 wheels often cross-shop, the E90-E92 and F30 cross-shop, and the F30 introduced separate Base, M-Sport, and X-Drive Gray brake packages that each carry their own offset window. The M3 raises the stakes further: F80 and G80 M3s offer carbon ceramic as an option, and the ceramic rotor takes more clearance behind the wheel face than the steel brake.

The G80 M3 with carbon ceramic carries the tightest clearance window of any 3 Series we sell. The ceramic option does not push the brake outward much, but the rotor hat geometry takes more clearance behind the wheel face. We measure both versions separately. If you are on a G80 M3 with carbon ceramic, confirm wheel face clearance before ordering. Our team does that on every wheel we recommend. How We Confirm Fitment on BMW 3 Series Wheels

For the 3 Series that means clearance from the wheel to the fender, gap between the back of the wheel and the suspension, brake caliper height (Base, M-Sport, X-Drive Gray, or Carbon Ceramic on the M3), hub bore confirmation, lug stud height, and turning clearance.
