Land Rover Defender Aftermarket Wheel Fitment
Element Wheels measures the modern Land Rover Defender on the L663 platform that launched for the 2020 model year. This is the Defender we sell wheels for. The L663 uses a 5x120 bolt pattern with a 72.6mm hub bore on every trim, Base brakes and 6-piston brakes alike, in 90 and 110 body styles. The pre-2016 classic Defender ran a different platform with different specs and is not part of this catalog. The L663 is one of the more demanding wheel platforms in the luxury 4x4 segment: wide 10 inch and over fitments need a +30mm offset or lower to clear the suspension, 28 inch wheels need +30mm offset or higher, and the overland lift fitment carries its own measured window. Pick your trim below for the fitment specs.
Find Your Land Rover Defender Trim
Pick your brake package and lift status to see wheels and rims that fit your Defender. Bolt pattern stays 5x120 / 72.6mm CB across every L663 trim. What changes is the clearance window behind the wheel and the lift-adjusted offset window for overland builds.
The Land Rover Defender Bolt Pattern
The modern L663 Defender uses 5x120 with a 72.6mm hub bore. That covers Defender 90 and Defender 110 body styles, P300, P400, P500 V8, and the 130 long-wheelbase variants, on Base and 6-piston brake packages. Five lugs, 120mm bolt circle, 72.6mm hub bore.
Important distinction: the classic pre-2016 Defender ran a completely different platform with a different bolt pattern and is not part of the L663 wheel catalog. If your Defender is pre-2016, the wheels on this page will not fit your truck. Confirm your model year before ordering. Compare across the rest of the Land Rover lineup at our Land Rover wheels and rims hub.
Why Defender Brake And Lift Determine Wheel Fit
The Defender is sold with two brake packages that change the inside-clearance window: the Base brake setup on standard trims and the 6-piston brake setup on performance and higher trims. The 6-piston brake reduces the clearance behind the wheel face and tightens the offset and width window. The Defender is also sold by many buyers as a serious overland platform. Our catalog tracks a separate overland fitment with a 1.5 to 2 inch lift on both brake packages. Lift changes the fender clearance and the diameter window. The lifted truck takes a different aftermarket wheel diameter and width range than the stock-height truck.
Element Wheels Measured Aftermarket Fitment, Land Rover Defender L663
Publishable factory and wheel specs across the Defender trims:
- Defender w/ Base Brakes (2020 and up): 5x120 bolt pattern, 72.6mm hub bore. Element aftermarket diameter range: 18-24 inch. Aftermarket width range: 8.5-10.5 inch.
- Defender w/ 6-Piston Brakes (2020 and up): 5x120, 72.6mm CB. Element aftermarket diameter range: 18-24 inch. Aftermarket width range: 8.5-10.5 inch.
- Defender Overland w/ Base Brakes (1.5-2 in. Lift): 5x120, 72.6mm CB. Element aftermarket diameter range: 18-22 inch. Aftermarket width range: 8.5-9.5 inch.
- Defender Overland w/ 6-Piston Brakes (1.5-2 in. Lift): 5x120, 72.6mm CB. Element aftermarket diameter range: 18-22 inch. Aftermarket width range: 8.5-9.5 inch.
Catalog-noted constraints on Defender aftermarket fitment:
- Wheels 10 inch wide or wider need a +30mm offset or lower to clear the suspension.
- 28 inch diameter wheels need a +30mm offset or higher.
Offset windows are tightly controlled for the Defender brake and suspension clearance, especially on the wider and larger diameter aftermarket builds. For your exact aftermarket offset, three options:
- 1. Use our Year/Make/Model search to see wheels that fit your specific Defender trim and brake package (each listing shows its own offset).
- 2. Browse the Defender wheel gallery for real-life builds with size, offset, and tire spec captions.
- 3. Call or chat with our team for a free fitment consultation.
How We Confirm Fitment on Land Rover Defender Wheels
Element Wheels measures fitment on the platforms we sell wheels for, including the L663 Defender. For the Defender that means clearance from the wheel to the fender, gap between the back of the wheel and the suspension, caliper height for Base versus 6-piston, hub bore confirmation on the 72.6mm Defender hub, lug nut seat depth, and steering and articulation clearance with the wheel and tire installed under both stock-height and 1.5 to 2 inch lifted suspension. At our fitment facility in Chandler, Arizona, the Element Wheels team measures directly on the physical platforms we support. We don't pull specs from manufacturer sheets the way most retailers do.
Every wheel we recommend is backed by our Fitment Guarantee. If a wheel does not fit, we pick up the wheels and refund 100 percent. No risk to you.
Land Rover Defender Wheels and Rims FAQ
What is the bolt pattern on a Land Rover Defender?
The modern L663 Defender (2020 and up) uses 5x120 with a 72.6mm hub bore. That covers Defender 90, Defender 110, and Defender 130, on Base brakes and 6-piston brakes alike. The classic pre-2016 Defender ran a different platform with different specs and is not part of this catalog.
Modern L663 Defender vs classic Defender: what changes for wheels?
Everything. The L663 Defender that launched in 2020 is an all-new platform with a different chassis, different suspension, different brakes, and a different bolt pattern from the classic Defender that ended production in 2016. Wheels do not interchange between the classic and modern Defender. If you have a pre-2016 Defender, the wheels on this page will not fit. Confirm your model year before ordering. The modern L663 is what we measure and recommend wheels for.
Defender Base brakes vs 6-piston brakes: what changes for wheel fit?
The 6-piston brake setup carries a larger caliper than the Base brake setup, which reduces the clearance behind the wheel face and tightens the inside-clearance window. The wheel diameter range stays the same (18 to 24 inch) on both brake packages. What changes is the offset window we can recommend behind the wheel face. We track Base and 6-piston as separate fitments. Confirm which brake package your Defender has before ordering. Use the Year/Make/Model search to filter wheels for your specific brake package.
Are Land Rover Defender wheels staggered?
No. The Defender runs a square (non-staggered) fitment from the factory and from our aftermarket catalog. Same wheel and tire size front and rear. The full-time 4x4 system, the off-road duty cycle, and the tire wear pattern on a body-on-frame luxury SUV all benefit from a matched square fitment.
What is the largest wheel I can fit on a Defender?
Our measured aftermarket window tops at 24 inch on the stock-height Defender on either brake package. The catalog also notes that 28 inch wheels can be run on a stock-height Defender if the offset is +30mm or higher to clear the suspension. On the overland-lifted Defender (1.5 to 2 inch lift) the practical aftermarket window narrows to 18 to 22 inch with a 9.5 inch maximum width, because the lift changes the fender clearance and the tire takes more of the rolling diameter on overland builds.
Do I need spacers or hub centric rings on a Defender?
The wheel and offset combinations we recommend fit the Defender as measured, no spacer required. Hub centric rings only when the aftermarket wheel has a centerbore larger than 72.6mm. If your fitment needs rings, they'll be included with the order.
What is the factory OEM offset and torque spec on a Land Rover Defender?
The factory L663 Defender wheel ships with a positive offset in the high 30s to mid 40s mm range, typical for the JLR platform. Land Rover lug nut torque on the Defender is approximately 140 Nm (about 103 ft-lbs). Always confirm against your owner manual for your exact year and trim. Re-torque after 50 to 100 miles when installing new wheels. For your specific aftermarket offset, including the +30mm-or-lower window for 10 inch and wider builds and the +30mm-or-higher window for 28 inch builds, search wheels by your trim and brake package (each listing publishes its own offset), browse the wheel gallery, or contact our team for a free fitment consultation.
How do I find the right wheels for my specific Land Rover Defender?
Confirm your model year (2020 or newer L663) and brake package (Base or 6-piston), and whether your Defender is stock-height or running a 1.5 to 2 inch overland lift. Use our Year/Make/Model search to see wheels that fit your specific Defender (each listing publishes its own offset) and browse the wheel gallery for real-life builds. If you are running a lift, considering a 28 inch wheel, or have a 10 inch wide or wider build in mind, contact our team for a free fitment consultation before ordering. Every wheel we recommend is backed by the Fitment Guarantee.
