The Mazda MX-5 is the canonical lightweight rear drive roadster, in production from 1989 forward and one of the longer-running platforms in our catalog. The car was badged as the Miata in the US through the third generation (NC) and into the early ND years, and the MX-5 global nameplate is now used across both Miata and Miata-renamed markets. Element Wheels measures fitment across four generations: the original NA (1990-1997), the NB (1999-2005), the larger NC MX-5 (2006-2015), and the current ND MX-5 (2016 and up), including the ND RF hardtop with Brembo brakes. The MX-5 is the rare platform where the bolt pattern and the hub bore both shift across the generation history, which makes getting this right the single most important thing on this car. The NA and NB ran 4x100 with a 54.1mm hub bore. The NC was the only 5-lug MX-5, running 5x114.3 with a 67.1mm hub bore for that one generation. The ND went back to 4-lug (4x100) but kept the larger 67.1mm hub bore from the NC. Three different lug configurations exist across the MX-5 lineage. The Mazda MX-5 Bolt Pattern History

The MX-5 is one of the rare platforms where the bolt pattern changes more than once over the model run. Three configurations exist:

• NA and NB (1990-2005): 4x100 bolt pattern with a 54.1mm hub bore. Four-lug wheels, small hub bore. The NA is the original 1989/1990-1997 roadster (the pop-up headlight car). The NB is the 1999-2005 update with fixed headlights and a slightly larger body.
• NC (2006-2015): 5x114.3 bolt pattern with a 67.1mm hub bore. Mazda moved the MX-5 to a 5-lug hub for this single generation, sharing the chassis platform underneath with the larger Mazda RX-8 (also 5x114.3 / 67.1mm). The NC is the only 5-lug MX-5.
• ND (2016 and up): 4x100 bolt pattern with a 67.1mm hub bore. Mazda went back to 4-lug for the ND. The lug pattern matched the original NA and NB, but the hub bore stayed at 67.1mm (the larger NC value). The ND is the only MX-5 to run 4x100 with the larger hub bore.

Practically, that means wheels rarely cross between MX-5 generations. A 4x100 wheel from a 1995 NA will not bolt onto a 2010 NC (NC is 5-lug). A 4x100 wheel from a 1995 NA will physically thread onto an ND, but the smaller 54.1mm centerbore on the NA wheel will leave a gap against the ND's 67.1mm hub. NC wheels (5x114.3) will not bolt onto any other MX-5 generation. The MX-5 is one platform where the Year/Make/Model search matters more than usual, do not assume "MX-5 wheel" implies your specific car. The 5x114.3 pattern on the NC is also written as 5x4.5 in imperial. That imperial nickname refers ONLY to 5x114.3 (114.3mm equals 4.5 inches) and NOT to 5x115. Why Every MX-5 Runs Square Fitment, and the ND RF Brembo Split

The MX-5 is rear wheel drive but it is engineered as a balanced lightweight car, not as a power-hungry rear staggered sport sedan. Mazda specs matched front and rear wheel and tire size across every generation, from the 1990 NA through the current ND. Square fitment is the default and the right call on an MX-5. The chassis balance and the modest power output do not call for a wider rear wheel. We do not recommend staggered setups on an MX-5, and Element catalog rows match this with identical front and rear width specs across every generation.

The brake package on the NA, NB, NC, and base-brake ND is matched front to rear. The one exception is the ND MX-5 RF (the power-folding retractable hardtop) when ordered with the Brembo brake option. That trim runs a larger front brake than rear, which is the norm on a performance car of this caliber. The front axle does the majority of the braking work and Mazda scales the front rotor and caliper accordingly. The Brembo front caliper on an ND RF needs more inner-barrel clearance than the base ND caliper does, which raises the minimum aftermarket diameter on that one trim. We measure the ND RF Brembo separately for that reason.

How We Confirm Fitment on Mazda MX-5 Wheels

For the MX-5 that means clearance from the wheel to the fender (the NA and NB have particularly tight fender wells, and an aggressively-offset wheel that fits a modern car will often rub on an early MX-5), gap between the back of the wheel and the suspension, brake caliper height (especially the ND RF Brembo front caliper), hub bore confirmation (54.1mm on NA and NB, 67.1mm on NC and ND), lug seat geometry, and lug count confirmation since three different lug counts exist across the platform.
