It was called the GL-Class before the 2017 model year, when Mercedes renamed the SUV lineup to align with the GL prefix system (GLA, GLC, GLE, GLS). The rename was nomenclature only. The X166 chassis that launched as the 2013 GL Class carried across the 2017 rename into the X166 GLS unchanged. The Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class Bolt Pattern

Every modern Mercedes-Benz GL-Class and GLS-Class uses 5x112 with a 66.56mm hub bore. That covers the X164 GL (2007-2012), X166 GL (2013-2016), X166 GLS (2016-2019), and the current X167 GLS (2020 and up), including AMG GL 63, AMG GLS 63, and the Maybach GLS 600. The 2017 rename from GL to GLS did not change the chassis or the bolt pattern. The X166 carried directly across the name change, and the X167 inherited the same 5x112 / 66.56mm spec when Mercedes redesigned the full-size SUV for the 2020 model year.

The 5x112 / 66.56mm bolt pattern is the universal modern Mercedes-Benz pattern, shared with the C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, GLC, GLE, GLA, GLB, and CLS. A wheel built for any of these will bolt onto a GLS hub in pattern and hub centering, but the GLS body style carries different fender clearance, ride height, and tire diameter window than the sedans and smaller SUVs, so the wheel will sit differently. The GLS is also the largest body in the Mercedes lineup. A wheel measured for a smaller Mercedes will physically clear the studs and hub but the sizing window we recommend is wider.

The lug stud thread did transition. Earlier GL and X166 GLS (through 2019) ran M14x1.5. The current X167 GLS 450 / 580, X167 GLS 63 AMG, and Maybach GLS 600 moved to M15x1.25, in line with the V167 GLE lug change Mercedes rolled out around the same time. The bolt pattern (5x112) and hub bore (66.56mm) did not change. Reusing factory lugs across the older and newer GLS-Class requires verifying thread spec for your exact trim and year. Why GLS Trim And Brake Package Determine Wheel Fit

The GLS family runs across base, AMG, and Maybach tiers, and each tier changes the fitment window. The base GL 350 / 450 / 550 (X164 and X166) and GLS 350 / 450 / 550 / 580 (X166 and X167) ship with the standard Mercedes large-SUV brake package and square fitment, same wheel and tire size front and rear. The GL 63 AMG (X166) and the GLS 63 AMG (X166 and X167) ship with a larger brake package than the base trims. The current X167 GLS 63 AMG also moves to a must-staggered factory fitment: wider rear wheel than front, with the rear tire taller than the front. The Maybach GLS 600 sits at the top of the lineup with its own brake setup, factory staggered geometry, and a tighter offset window than the standard X167 GLS 450 / 580. The front brake is larger than the rear on every AMG GLS variant, which is standard on a performance SUV at this output level.
