Toyota Tacoma Aftermarket Wheel Fitment
The Toyota Tacoma is the best-selling mid-size pickup in America and one of the most active lift-market platforms in our catalog. Bolt pattern depends on drivetrain and generation. The 4WD and PreRunner Tacomas have used 6x139.7 (also called 6x5.5) across every generation from 1995 to the current 4th gen (2024 and up). The 1st and 2nd gen 2WD Tacomas (1995-2004) ran 5x114.3 / 60.1mm. From the 3rd gen onward (2016+) the Tacoma is 6x139.7 only. The 4th gen brought two important changes to the 6-lug spec: the hub bore shrank from 106mm to 95.2mm, and the thread pitch went from 12x1.5 to 14x1.5. Element Wheels measures Tacoma fitment by generation, breaks stock height out from leveled and lifted on every generation, tracks the 4th gen TRD Pro separately, and flags trimming and cab-mount work on aggressive builds. Find your generation below and the recommendations follow.
Find Your Toyota Tacoma Generation
Pick your year range to see wheels and rims that fit your specific Tacoma. The 1st gen 2WD (1995-2000) and 1st gen 2WD late (2001-2004) are 5-lug 5x114.3 trucks. Every 4WD or PreRunner Tacoma is 6x139.7. The 3rd gen (2016-2023) and 4th gen (2024 and up) are 6-lug across every trim. The hub bore and thread pitch change on the 4th gen, so match your year carefully.

The Toyota Tacoma Bolt Pattern
The Tacoma's bolt pattern depends on drivetrain and generation. Every 4WD and PreRunner Tacoma from 1995 forward uses 6x139.7 (the imperial nickname is 6x5.5, since 139.7mm equals 5.5 inches). This is the same 6-lug pattern Toyota uses on the 4Runner, the older Land Cruiser, and the FJ Cruiser. The 1st gen 2WD (1995-2000) and 1st gen 2WD late (2001-2004) Tacomas are the exceptions: those trucks ran 5x114.3 / 60.1mm. From 2005 the X-Runner sport trim also ran 5x114.3. From the 3rd gen onward (2016 and newer), every Tacoma regardless of drivetrain is 6x139.7.
The 4th gen redesign (2024 and up) kept the 6x139.7 bolt pattern but changed two related specs. The hub bore shrank from 106mm to 95.2mm, and the lug-stud thread pitch moved from 12x1.5 to 14x1.5. A 3rd gen Tacoma wheel will bolt onto a 4th gen Tacoma hub on bolt pattern alone, but the lug nuts do not interchange (different thread pitch) and the wheel will sit lug-centric instead of hub-centric on the smaller 95.2mm hub. We track this transition closely because it is the most-mistaken Tacoma-to-Tacoma fitment question we get. Compare across the rest of the Toyota lineup at our Toyota wheels and rims hub.
Why Tacoma Stock vs Lifted Fitment Matters
The Tacoma has one of the most active aftermarket lift markets in the mid-size pickup segment. Stock-height owners run 16 to 18 inch wheels for street and overland builds. Leveled trucks running 32 inch tires move into a different fitment window. 3 to 4 inch lifts on 33s and 6 inch lifts on 35s each get their own measurements in our catalog. The wheel that fits a stock-height Tacoma can rub the inner fender or contact a control arm once the truck is lifted, and the wider lifted-fitment wheels often poke past the fender on a stock-height truck.
Two Tacoma-specific details. On the 3rd gen (2016-2023), running a 2 inch lift with 285/70 tires at 0mm offset requires cab-mount frame modification for clearance at full lock. We flag this in the catalog notes before shipping so the work can be planned, not discovered on installation day. Second, the 4th gen TRD Pro is tracked as a separate fitment in our catalog from the standard 4th gen Tacoma. The TRD Pro suspension package changes ride height and tire clearance enough to shift the offset window; the factory wheel on a 4th gen TRD Pro is 18x8.5 +11mm and our measured aftermarket window opens up around that anchor. The other 4th gen TRD trims (Off-Road, Sport, Trailhunter) sit within the standard 4th gen fitment window.
How We Confirm Fitment on Toyota Tacoma Wheels
Element Wheels measures fitment on the platforms we sell wheels for, including every Tacoma generation back to 1995. For the Tacoma that means clearance from the wheel to the fender, gap between the back of the wheel and the suspension, brake caliper height, hub protrusion, lug seat depth, turning clearance at full lock on the bigger tire sizes, cab-mount clearance on the 3rd gen lifted builds, and trimming requirements where they apply. At our fitment facility in Chandler, Arizona, the Element Wheels team measures directly on the physical platforms we support. We don't pull specs from manufacturer sheets the way most retailers do.

Toyota Tacoma Wheels and Rims FAQ
What is the bolt pattern on a Toyota Tacoma?
It depends on drivetrain and generation. Every 4WD and PreRunner Tacoma from 1995 forward uses 6x139.7 (also called 6x5.5). The 1st gen 2WD (1995-2000) and 1st gen 2WD late (2001-2004) ran 5x114.3 / 60.1mm. From the 3rd gen onward (2016 and newer), every Tacoma is 6x139.7 regardless of drivetrain. Lug count narrows it: 5 studs means a 1st or 2nd gen 2WD Tacoma. 6 studs means a 4WD, PreRunner, or any 3rd gen or newer Tacoma.
Will my 3rd gen Tacoma wheels fit a 4th gen Tacoma?
The bolt pattern crosses but two other specs do not. Both gens use 6x139.7. The 3rd gen hub is 106mm and the 4th gen hub is 95.2mm, so a 3rd gen wheel sits lug-centric (not hub-centric) on a 4th gen truck. The lug-stud thread pitch also changed from 12x1.5 on the 3rd gen to 14x1.5 on the 4th gen, so your existing lug nuts will not interchange between trucks. This is the most-mistaken Tacoma-to-Tacoma fitment question we get. Match the wheel listing to your specific generation.
What is the largest wheel I can fit on a Toyota Tacoma?
Our measured aftermarket window tops at 24 inch on stock-height 3rd and 4th gen Tacomas, with 26 inch reachable on 1st-3rd gen lifted builds. 17 to 18 inch is the most common pick for off-road builds running 33 to 35 inch tires. 20 inch is a common street setup. Above 24 inch on a stock-height truck the inner fender and brake clearance start dictating offset, and we recommend a free fitment consultation before ordering.
Are Toyota Tacoma wheels staggered?
No. The Tacoma runs square (same width front and rear) from the factory across every generation and almost every aftermarket build also runs square. The four wheel drive system on the 4WD trucks, the load distribution, and tire rotation on a mid-size pickup all benefit from the same wheel and tire size on every corner.
TRD Off-Road vs TRD Sport vs TRD Pro: do they share wheels?
Bolt pattern and hub bore are the same across TRD Off-Road, TRD Sport, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter within a given generation (6x139.7 / 106mm on the 3rd gen, 6x139.7 / 95.2mm on the 4th gen). The fitment window narrows on the TRD Pro because the factory suspension package raises the truck slightly and the factory wheel is a wider 18x8.5 +11mm spec. We track the 4th gen TRD Pro as a separate fitment in our catalog. The other TRD trims sit within the standard 4th gen Tacoma window.
Do I need hub centric rings on a Toyota Tacoma?
Hub centric rings only when the aftermarket wheel has a centerbore larger than the Tacoma's factory hub. 1st-3rd gen 4WD/PreRunner: 106mm. 1st-2nd gen 2WD and X-Runner: 60.1mm. 4th gen (2024 and up): 95.2mm. If your fitment needs rings, they'll be included with the order.
Why do some 3rd gen Tacoma lifted fitments require cab-mount modification or trimming?
On the 2016-2023 3rd gen Tacoma, the cab-mount sits in the front tire's path at full lock once the truck is on a 2 inch lift running 285/70 tires at 0mm offset. The tire grows enough that it contacts the cab mount unless the mount is trimmed or relocated (often called the cab-mount chop). On the 4th gen with 35 inch tires, the inner fender and frame area need trimming for clearance. We flag both in the catalog notes before shipping so the work can be planned in advance.
How do I find the right wheels for my specific Toyota Tacoma build?
Four steps on the Tacoma. Confirm your generation by year. Confirm your drivetrain (2WD vs 4WD/PreRunner) on the 1st and 2nd gen. Confirm your suspension state (stock, leveled, 2-3 in lift, 4 in lift, 6 in lift). Confirm your TRD trim if you are on a 4th gen TRD Pro. Use our Year/Make/Model search to see wheels that fit your specific Tacoma and browse the wheel gallery for real-life builds. If your truck is leveled, lifted, or running 33 to 35 inch tires, contact our team for a free fitment consultation before ordering. Every wheel we recommend is backed by the Fitment Guarantee.
