Volkswagen GTI Aftermarket Wheel Fitment

The Volkswagen GTI is the performance hot hatch version of the Golf, sold continuously since the late 1970s and currently in its Mk8 generation. The GTI shares the same chassis, bolt pattern, centerbore, and lug spec as the standard Golf within each generation, so a wheel that fits a Mk7 Golf also fits a Mk7 GTI. The bolt pattern has moved across the modern lineup. The Mk2 era cars ran 4x100. The Mk4 cars (1999-2005) ran 5x100. From the Mk5 forward (2006 and up), every Golf and GTI runs 5x112. The centerbore has stayed 57.1mm across the entire modern lineup. The lug spec is M14x1.5 bolts on every modern Golf and GTI. VW runs lug bolts, not studs and nuts. The Golf R (the AWD performance variant above the GTI) is tracked as its own hub because it ships with a different brake package and an AWD-specific fitment window. Mk5 and newer (2006 and up): 5x112. Count the lug bolts on one wheel and check your year against the bolt pattern map. Centerbore is 57.1mm across every modern generation.

The Volkswagen GTI Bolt Pattern

The GTI and Golf bolt pattern has moved twice across the modern lineup. The Mk2 era cars ran 4x100. The Mk4 cars (1999-2005) moved to 5x100 (still with the 57.1mm hub bore). From the Mk5 forward (2006 and up), VW moved the Golf and GTI to 5x112 with the same 57.1mm hub bore. Every current GTI runs 5x112. The 57.1mm centerbore has stayed constant since the modern lineup began. Audi, VW, and most of the VW Group use the same 57.1mm hub on the smaller passenger cars. The bigger full-size SUVs (Audi Q7, Q8, Porsche Cayenne, VW Touareg, Bentley Bentayga) also use 5x112 but with a larger 66.56mm hub bore, so a 5x112 wheel from one of those vehicles will line up with the GTI lug holes but will not sit hub-centric on the GTI's 57.1mm hub.

The 5x112 / 57.1mm spec on the Mk5 through Mk8 GTI matches the smaller modern Audi cars (A3) and earlier Audi sedans (B5-B7 A4 and B6/B7 S4). The wheel architecture overlaps. A wheel that bolts to a Mk7 GTI hub will also bolt to an A3 hub of the same spec. Whether it clears the brake and lines up with the fender is a separate question. Why GTI Generation and Brake Package Determine Wheel Fit

The GTI ships from the factory with a larger front brake than the base Golf, which is the normal configuration on a performance hatch where the front handles the bulk of the braking force. Within each generation, the bolt pattern and hub bore on the GTI match the base Golf, but the practical aftermarket diameter floor is higher on the GTI because the larger front rotor needs more wheel face room. On the Mk5 forward, the GTI cleared 17 inch easily. On the Mk7 and Mk8 the practical aftermarket floor is 18 inch with the right wheel. The Golf and GTI are both FWD across every modern generation, and they ship square (non-staggered) from the factory.

The Golf R is the AWD performance variant above the GTI, and it is tracked as its own hub. The Golf R shares the 5x112 bolt pattern and 57.1mm hub bore with the GTI from the Mk6 forward, but it ships with a larger brake package than the GTI and runs 4Motion AWD, which makes the square setup mandatory rather than recommended. Golf R OEM wheels will usually bolt to a GTI hub, but the offset is intended for the wider Golf R fenders and the larger Golf R brake. If you have a Golf R, use the Golf R hub when it goes live.
