Volkswagen Tiguan Aftermarket Wheel Fitment

The Volkswagen Tiguan is VW's compact crossover, sold in North America since the 2009 model year. The Tiguan has carried two distinct chassis generations on the same wheel hub spec. The 1st gen Tiguan (2009-2017) shipped on the older PQ35 platform and ran a smaller wheel and tire from the factory. The 2nd gen Tiguan (2018 and up) moved to the MQB platform that anchors most of the modern VW passenger lineup and grew in length, which opened the door to larger aftermarket wheels. Both generations use 5x112 with a 57.1mm hub bore and M14x1.5 lug bolts. The bolt pattern is shared with the rest of the modern Volkswagen lineup (Atlas, Golf, GTI, Jetta, Arteon, Taos) and the smaller modern Audi cars. The hub bore is the smaller 57.1mm passenger-car spec, not the 66.56mm hub used on the full-size MLB Evo luxury SUVs (Audi Q7, Q8, Porsche Cayenne, VW Touareg, Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus). Pick your generation below for the fitment specs that apply to your specific Tiguan.

Find Your Volkswagen Tiguan Generation

Pick your generation to see wheels and rims that fit your specific Tiguan. Both generations share the 5x112 bolt pattern and 57.1mm hub bore. What changes between them is body proportion and the aftermarket diameter window. The 1st gen Tiguan is the smaller body and tops at 20 inch in our catalog. The 2nd gen Tiguan is the larger MQB-platform body and tops at 22 inch. Trim level (S, SE, SEL, SEL Premium R-Line) does not change the hub spec. The R-Line is a styling and appearance package, not a different mechanical setup.

The Volkswagen Tiguan Bolt Pattern

Every Tiguan, 1st gen and 2nd gen, uses 5x112 with a 57.1mm hub bore and M14x1.5 lug bolts. VW runs lug bolts on the Tiguan, not studs and nuts the way most American and Asian SUVs do. The lug bolt threads directly into the hub, the wheel sits between the head of the bolt and the hub face, and there is no fixed lug stud to align the wheel before tightening. This makes a hub-centric fit more important on the Tiguan than on a stud-and-nut SUV.

The 5x112 / 57.1mm spec on the Tiguan matches the rest of the modern Volkswagen passenger lineup (Atlas, Golf, GTI, Jetta, Arteon, Taos, ID.4) and the smaller Audi cars (A3). The wheels bolt to the same hub. The 5x112 pattern is shared more broadly with the full-size MLB Evo luxury SUVs (Q7, Q8, Cayenne, Touareg, Bentayga, Urus), but those SUVs run a larger 66.56mm hub bore. Bolt pattern says 5x112 wheels from those vehicles will line up with the Tiguan lug holes, but the hub bore is too large to sit hub-centric without rings, and the offset is sized for the larger fender openings on those vehicles. The practical answer: Tiguan hub spec lines up with the smaller VW Group passenger platforms, not the full-size luxury SUV family. Compare across the rest of the Volkswagen lineup at our Volkswagen wheels and rims hub.

Why Generation and Wheel Size Determine Tiguan Fit

The bolt pattern, hub bore, and lug spec are constant across both Tiguan generations. What differs is body proportion. The 1st gen Tiguan (2009-2017) is a noticeably smaller crossover, closer to the size of a tall Golf with raised ride height. Our 1st gen catalog window runs 16 to 20 inch diameter with 6.5 to 8.5 inch width, and most 1st gen aftermarket builds land at 18 inch. The 2nd gen Tiguan (2018 and up) is longer, wider, and rides on the MQB platform shared with the Atlas, Arteon, and GTI. It accepts a larger aftermarket wheel without looking out of proportion. Our 2nd gen catalog window runs 18 to 22 inch diameter with 8 to 9 inch width, and 19 or 20 inch is the most common 2nd gen choice. The SEL Premium R-Line trim ships with the largest factory wheel package, and the larger front brake on that trim takes more inner-barrel clearance than the base S and SE wheels do. We measure that variant separately. Square (non-staggered) is the factory and recommended configuration on every Tiguan because the Tiguan runs FWD or 4Motion AWD without a rear-bias setup that would benefit from a wider rear wheel.

Tiguan trim level (S, SE, SEL, SEL Premium R-Line) does not change the wheel bolt pattern or hub bore. The R-Line is a styling and appearance package on the same chassis as the matching SE or SEL. Drivetrain (FWD vs 4Motion AWD) does not change the wheel hub spec either. Both run the same bolt pattern, hub bore, and accept the same aftermarket wheel sizes.

Element Wheels Measured Aftermarket Fitment, Volkswagen Tiguan

Publishable factory and wheel specs across the Tiguan generations:

  • 1st Gen Tiguan (2009-2017): 5x112 bolt pattern, 57.1mm hub bore, M14x1.5 lug bolts. Element aftermarket diameter range: 16 to 20 inch. Aftermarket width range: 6.5 to 8.5 inch. Square fitment. PQ35 platform.
  • 2nd Gen Tiguan (2018 and up): 5x112 bolt pattern, 57.1mm hub bore, M14x1.5 lug bolts. Element aftermarket diameter range: 18 to 22 inch. Aftermarket width range: 8 to 9 inch. Square fitment. MQB platform, shared with the Atlas, Arteon, and modern GTI.

Offset windows are controlled by the Tiguan fender opening and brake clearance. For your exact aftermarket offset, three options:

  • 1. Use our Year/Make/Model search to see wheels that fit your specific Tiguan (each listing shows its own offset).
  • 2. Browse the Tiguan wheel gallery for real-life builds with size, offset, and tire spec captions.
  • 3. Call or chat with our team for a free fitment consultation.

How We Confirm Fitment on Volkswagen Tiguan Wheels

Element Wheels measures fitment on every platform we sell wheels for, including both Tiguan generations. That means clearance from the wheel to the fender, gap between the back of the wheel and the suspension, brake caliper height (the SEL Premium R-Line on the 2nd gen carries a larger front brake than the base trims), hub bore confirmation at 57.1mm (which is smaller than the 66.56mm hub on the full-size MLB Evo luxury SUVs, an important distinction), lug bolt seat depth for M14x1.5 bolts, and the body proportion change between the 1st gen PQ35 body and the 2nd gen MQB body. At our fitment facility in Chandler, Arizona, the Element Wheels team measures directly on the physical platforms we support. We don't pull specs from manufacturer sheets the way most retailers do.

Every wheel we recommend is backed by our Fitment Guarantee. If a wheel does not fit, we pick up the wheels and refund 100 percent. No risk to you.

Volkswagen Tiguan Wheels and Rims FAQ

What is the bolt pattern on a Volkswagen Tiguan?

Every Tiguan, 1st gen (2009-2017) and 2nd gen (2018 and up), runs 5x112 with M14x1.5 lug bolts and a 57.1mm hub bore. The pattern is shared with the rest of the modern Volkswagen passenger lineup (Atlas, Golf, GTI, Jetta, Arteon, Taos, ID.4) and the smaller Audi cars (A3). VW runs lug bolts, not studs and nuts, on the Tiguan.

What is the centerbore on a Volkswagen Tiguan?

57.1mm on every Tiguan, both generations. This is the same hub bore as the smaller VW Group passenger cars (Atlas, Golf, GTI, Jetta, ID.4). It is NOT the same as the 66.56mm hub bore on the modern MLB Evo Audi SUVs (Audi Q7 4M, Q8, original e-tron, Q8 e-tron), which run 5x112 with the larger 66.56mm hub. A 5x112 wheel from one of those Audi SUVs will line up with the Tiguan lug holes but will not sit hub-centric on the smaller 57.1mm Tiguan hub without rings, and the offset is sized for the larger fender openings on those vehicles. Separately, the Porsche Cayenne, VW Touareg, Bentley Bentayga, and Lamborghini Urus run 5x130 with a 71.5-71.6mm centerbore: a different bolt pattern entirely, and those wheels do not bolt to a Tiguan at all.

Will 1st gen Tiguan wheels fit a 2nd gen Tiguan?

Bolt pattern crosses (every Tiguan is 5x112 / 57.1mm) so the wheels bolt to the same hub. What does not always cross is offset and fender proportion. The 1st gen Tiguan is a smaller body sized around a 16 to 20 inch wheel. The 2nd gen Tiguan is the longer MQB body sized around an 18 to 22 inch wheel. A 1st gen factory wheel will sit deep in a 2nd gen fender opening and look undersized. A 2nd gen wheel sized for the larger body will sit fine on a 1st gen bolt-up but may rub the 1st gen fender or arch depending on offset. Bolt pattern says they cross. The fitment box says verify before you commit.

Will Atlas, Jetta, or GTI wheels fit my Tiguan?

Same 5x112 bolt pattern and same 57.1mm hub bore as the modern Atlas, Jetta, GTI, Golf, and Arteon. The wheels bolt to the same hub. What does not always cross is offset and fender clearance. The Atlas is a larger 3-row SUV with wider fenders, so an Atlas wheel sized for the Atlas opening will sit deep on a Tiguan. A Jetta or GTI wheel is closer in proportion to the Tiguan, especially the 2nd gen, but the offset window is still tuned for a sedan or hatchback rather than a crossover. Bolt pattern crosses. Verify the specific wheel offset before committing.

Why does the Tiguan use lug bolts instead of studs and nuts?

VW (and most of the VW Group, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche) builds passenger cars and SUVs with lug bolts threaded directly into the hub instead of fixed studs with separate nuts. The bolt holds the wheel against the hub face with no stud to pre-align the wheel during mounting. Lug bolts are M14x1.5 on every Tiguan. Hub-centric fit matters more on lug-bolt vehicles because there is no stud to pre-align the wheel during mounting, so wheels with the correct 57.1mm centerbore are preferred.

Are Volkswagen Tiguan wheels staggered?

Square is the default. Every Tiguan ships square (non-staggered) from the factory because it is a compact crossover without a rear-biased drivetrain that would benefit from a wider rear wheel. 4Motion AWD also benefits from the same wheel and tire size on every corner. Almost every aftermarket Tiguan build runs square. Aftermarket staggered Tiguan builds are unusual and not the recommended configuration.

What is the largest wheel I can fit on a Volkswagen Tiguan?

On the 1st gen Tiguan (2009-2017) our measured aftermarket window tops at 20 inch. On the 2nd gen Tiguan (2018 and up) the window tops at 22 inch. 19 or 20 inch is the most common 2nd gen Tiguan aftermarket choice because the tire sidewall stays in a comfortable range at those diameters. Above 22 inch on the 2nd gen, the tire sidewall thins enough that ride quality drops noticeably on what is meant to be a daily-driven family crossover.

Do I need hub centric rings on a Volkswagen Tiguan?

Hub centric rings only when the aftermarket wheel has a centerbore larger than 57.1mm. If your fitment needs rings, they'll be included with the order.
