Acura MDX Aftermarket Wheel Fitment

The Acura MDX is Acura's three-row luxury SUV, in production from 2001 and continuing through the current 4th generation. The MDX is Acura's volume luxury SUV and shares a global light-truck platform with the Honda Pilot family across most of its history. The bolt pattern has not been steady across the MDX lifetime. The 1st gen (2001-2006) ran 5x114.3. The 2nd gen (2007-2013) moved to 5x120. The early 3rd gen (2014-2016) returned to 5x114.3 for three model years before Acura moved back to 5x120 for the 2017-2020 facelift and the current 4th gen (2022 and up). The centerbore stayed 64.1mm the whole time. The 4th gen MDX Type-S adds front Brembo brake calipers on top of the standard 4th gen MDX brake setup. Element Wheels measures fitment on every MDX generation and the Type-S separately. Find your generation below and the fitment specs follow.

Find Your Acura MDX Generation

Pick your year range to see wheels and rims that fit your specific MDX. The bolt pattern transitions are the first thing to confirm. 2001-2006: 5x114.3. 2007-2013: 5x120. 2014-2016: 5x114.3. 2017 and up: 5x120. Hub bore stays 64.1mm on every MDX. The 4th gen MDX Type-S is a separate trim from the base 4th gen MDX because of the front Brembo brake upgrade.

The Acura MDX Bolt Pattern Has Switched Multiple Times

The MDX bolt pattern is less stable than most SUV nameplates. The 1st gen (2001-2006) ran 5x114.3 with a 64.1mm hub bore. The 2nd gen (2007-2013) moved to 5x120 / 64.1mm. The early 3rd gen (2014-2016) returned to 5x114.3 / 64.1mm for three model years; this is the back-and-forth that catches buyers because they assume the bolt pattern only moves forward in time. Acura then moved back to 5x120 / 64.1mm for the 2017-2020 facelift, and the 4th gen (2022 and up) continues on 5x120 / 64.1mm.

The 64.1mm hub bore is uniform on every MDX generation. The wheel pattern is what changes. A wheel from a 2009 MDX (5x120) does not bolt onto a 2015 MDX (5x114.3) and vice versa. A wheel from a 2015 MDX (5x114.3) does not bolt onto a 2018 MDX (5x120). Always confirm the bolt pattern by year before ordering. The detail that helps: 5x114.3 is sometimes called 5x4.5 (114.3mm = 4.5 inches). 5x120 has no imperial nickname; it stays 5x120. If your title says 5x4.5, the wheel is 5x114.3 and is incompatible with the 2007-2013 or 2017-and-up MDX generations.

The MDX is broadly the same global light-truck platform as the same-era Honda Pilot, so the bolt pattern transitions track Honda's platform changes. Compare against the rest of the Acura lineup at our Acura wheels and rims hub.

Why the 4th Gen MDX Type-S Fitment Is Different

The 4th gen MDX (2022 and up) includes a Type-S variant that adds front Brembo brake calipers on top of the base 4th gen MDX setup. The Type-S is the only MDX with the front Brembo upgrade. The bolt pattern and hub bore are identical to the base 4th gen MDX (5x120 / 64.1mm), but the front Brembo caliper takes more inner clearance behind the wheel face than the base caliper. A wheel face that clears a base 4th gen MDX may not clear the Type-S front Brembo. We measure both versions separately. If you are on a Type-S, confirm wheel face clearance before ordering. The Type-S also runs the same diameter and width window we publish for the base 4th gen MDX; the clearance question is the difference.

For your exact aftermarket offset, three options:

How We Confirm Fitment on Acura MDX Wheels

Element Wheels measures fitment on the platforms we sell wheels for, including every MDX generation back to 2001. For the MDX that means clearance from the wheel to the fender, gap between the back of the wheel and the suspension, brake caliper height (especially on the Type-S with the front Brembo), hub bore confirmation, lug seat depth, and turning clearance. At our fitment facility in Chandler, Arizona, the Element Wheels team measures directly on the physical platforms we support. We don't pull specs from manufacturer sheets the way most retailers do.

That measurement work is what produced the per-generation fitment windows on this page and what lets us flag the Type-S Brembo clearance as a separate constraint. Bolt pattern transitions on the MDX have caused real customer mistakes; we have seen 5x120 wheels ordered for a 2015 MDX and 5x114.3 wheels ordered for a 2018 MDX. The Fitment Guarantee covers the customer either way; the goal is to get it right the first time.

Acura MDX Wheels and Rims FAQ

What is the bolt pattern on an Acura MDX?

It depends on the year. 2001-2006 MDX: 5x114.3. 2007-2013 MDX: 5x120. 2014-2016 MDX: 5x114.3. 2017 and newer MDX: 5x120. The bolt pattern has moved back and forth across the MDX history, so always confirm by year before ordering. Hub bore is 64.1mm on every MDX.

Why does the MDX bolt pattern keep changing?

The MDX tracks Honda's broader light-truck platform changes. The 1st gen MDX (5x114.3) sat on one Honda platform. The 2nd gen and 3rd gen late MDX (5x120) sat on a newer Honda light-truck platform that used the wider 5x120 pattern. The early 3rd gen (2014-2016) was a short transition window that returned to 5x114.3 before Acura settled back on 5x120 for the facelift. The 4th gen (2022 and up) stayed on 5x120. The result is more pattern transitions than most SUVs see, which is why the year matters more on an MDX than on a Honda Pilot or a Honda Civic.

What is the MDX Type-S and how does it differ for wheels?

The 4th gen MDX Type-S is the performance variant within the current MDX lineup, with a more powerful turbocharged V6 and front Brembo brake calipers from the factory. The bolt pattern and hub bore are identical to the base 4th gen MDX (5x120 / 64.1mm). The front Brembo caliper takes more inner clearance behind the wheel face. A wheel that clears a base 4th gen MDX may not clear the Type-S front Brembo, so confirm wheel face clearance before ordering on a Type-S.

Are Acura MDX wheels staggered?

No. Every MDX generation runs square (non-staggered) fitment from the factory. The MDX is a Super Handling All Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) platform from the 2nd gen onward, and the AWD system needs matched wheel and tire sizes on every corner. Same wheel spec works front and rear on every MDX. Running staggered on the MDX is not recommended.

Will Honda Pilot wheels fit my Acura MDX?

Sometimes. The MDX and the Pilot are platform siblings within Honda's light-truck family and they typically share a bolt pattern within the same era. But the Pilot has its own brake setup and its own factory offset window. Confirm the wheel was fit-tested on the MDX specifically. We measure each platform separately.

What is the largest wheel I can fit on an Acura MDX?

Our measured aftermarket window tops at 24 inch on the 4th gen MDX (2022 and up) and at 22 inch on the 2nd and 3rd gen MDX. 20 inch is the most common aftermarket choice across the modern MDX lineup. Above 22 inch on the older MDX, tire sidewall thins enough that ride quality drops and the wheel sits at curb-damage risk.

Do I need hub centric rings on an Acura MDX?

Hub centric rings only when the aftermarket wheel has a centerbore larger than 64.1mm. If your fitment needs rings, they'll be included with the order.

How do I find the right wheels for my specific Acura MDX build?

Three steps. Confirm your generation and year (the bolt pattern moves between 5x114.3 and 5x120 across the MDX history, so the year matters). Use our Year/Make/Model search to see wheels that fit your specific MDX (each listing shows its own offset) and browse the wheel gallery for real-life builds. If your MDX is the Type-S with the front Brembo upgrade, contact our team for a free fitment consultation before ordering. Every wheel we recommend is backed by the Fitment Guarantee.
