BMW 1-Series Aftermarket Wheel Fitment

The BMW 1-Series is BMW's entry compact, sold in the US from 2008 through 2013 as the E82 coupe (128i, 135i, 135is) and the E88 convertible (128i, 135i). The same E-chassis generation included the E81 three door hatch and the E87 five door hatch in European and other markets, all sharing the rear wheel drive platform and the same hub interface. Element Wheels measures the 2008-2013 1-Series as a single catalog family. Bolt pattern is 5x120 with a 72.56mm hub bore and M12x1.5 lug bolts. The 1-Series shares its hub interface with the rest of the legacy BMW lineup of that era: the E90 3-Series, the E92 M3, and the F22 2-Series RWD coupe that replaced it. BMW launched a 2nd generation 1-Series (F20 / F21) and a 3rd generation (F40) in Europe and other markets after 2013. Those cars were not sold in the United States. The F40 in particular moved to BMW's front wheel drive UKL2 platform, which in the US market shipped under the 2-Series Gran Coupe (F44) badge instead. The 1st generation E-chassis (E81 / E82 / E87 / E88) is the only 1-Series sold in the US, and the only generation measured in our active catalog. The 128i and the 135i (and the 135is on the very late E82 and E88 cars) share the same bolt pattern, centerbore, and lug spec. The 135i and 135is carry a larger M Performance brake package than the 128i and the offset clearance behind the wheel face is tighter, which we measure separately on those trims.

The BMW 1-Series Bolt Pattern and Hub Bore

Every 2008-2013 BMW 1-Series runs 5x120 with a 72.56mm hub bore and M12x1.5 lug bolts. The 5x120 / 72.56mm pattern is the legacy BMW spec used across the E-chassis lineup, including the E90 3-Series, the E92 3-Series coupe, the E92 M3, and the F22 2-Series RWD coupe that replaced the 1-Series in 2014. A wheel built for any of those platforms will bolt to a 1-Series in pattern and centerbore. Offset windows differ between the cars even where the bolt math matches, so we measure each platform separately. The 1-Series uses M12x1.5 lug bolts, which is half a thread pitch finer than the M14x1.25 bolts BMW moved to on the F-chassis cars and current generation lineup. That makes the 1-Series the only BMW US-market platform of this era running M12x1.5, and a 1-Series wheel that fits an E90 or an E92 will use the same bolt thread.

BMW moved off 5x120 entirely on the modern lineup. The G20 3-Series, the G42 2-Series, and the G05 X5 all run 5x112 with a 66.56mm hub bore. A modern BMW wheel will NOT bolt onto a 1-Series, and a 1-Series wheel will not bolt onto a modern BMW. The 8mm separation between 5x112 and 5x120 is enough that the wheel will not seat correctly on the wrong hub and the lug bolts will stress against the wheel face if forced. Why the 135i Brake Package and the Optional Stagger Matter

The 2008-2013 1-Series shipped in two engine tiers in the US: the 128i (3.0L naturally aspirated inline six) and the 135i (3.0L twin turbo inline six on early cars, single twin scroll turbo from 2011, plus the limited 135is in 2013). The 128i and the 135i share the same bolt pattern, centerbore, and lug spec, so the wheel hub interface does not change between the two. What changes is the brake package. The 135i and 135is carry a larger M Performance brake package than the 128i, with a bigger front caliper that sits closer to the wheel face. The published diameter and width window is similar on both, but the 135i and 135is need more inner barrel clearance for the larger front caliper, which tightens the offset window behind the wheel face. We measure both.

The 1-Series is a rear wheel drive car and ships with optional staggered fitment, which is the typical aftermarket choice on this chassis. The factory ships a slightly wider rear wheel and tire on most 135i builds and a square setup on most 128i builds. Either approach works for aftermarket builds within the published windows. Square setups are common on the 128i because the lower power output does not require the wider rear for traction. Staggered builds are more common on the 135i and 135is because the twin turbo six can use the extra rear width for grip. Front brake larger than rear is standard on the 135i and 135is, which is normal on a performance oriented coupe of this caliber.
