The BMW 8 Series is BMW's flagship two-door grand tourer, sold across two distinct eras separated by a 22-year production gap. The modern 8 Series (2019 and up) spans three body styles on a shared G-chassis architecture: the G15 Coupe, the G14 Convertible, and the G16 Gran Coupe. Modern trims include the 840i, the 840i with M-Sport Brakes, and the M850i X-Drive. Every modern 8 Series carries 5x112 with a 66.56mm hub bore and ships must-staggered from the factory. The historical E31 8 Series (1992-1997 model years) is a different chassis and a different bolt pattern: 5x120 with a 72.56mm hub bore. The high-performance M8 derivatives (F91 Convertible, F92 Coupe, F93 Gran Coupe) share the modern 8 Series's chassis architecture and 5x112 / 66.56mm spec, but the M8 has its own fitment encyclopedia at /wheels/bmw/m8. The BMW 8 Series Bolt Pattern And Its Two Eras

The 8 Series carries two different bolt patterns across its two eras. The modern G14 (Convertible), G15 (Coupe), and G16 (Gran Coupe), spanning the 840i, 840i with M-Sport Brakes, and M850i X-Drive trims, all use 5x112 with a 66.56mm hub bore. That matches the broader BMW G-chassis transition that moved the 3 Series, 5 Series, 6 Series GT, 7 Series, and the M8 onto 5x112 / 66.56mm starting in the late 2010s. Any 5x112 / 66.56mm wheel built for a modern BMW will mount in pattern and hub centering, although offset and brake clearance still need to match the specific 8 Series trim.

The historical E31 8 Series (1992-1997 model years) is a separate chassis on the legacy BMW 5x120 / 72.56mm pattern, the same pattern used by the E32 7 Series, the E34 5 Series, and the rest of the BMW 5x120 family from that era. A 5x112 wheel built for a modern G15 will not bolt onto an E31, and a 5x120 wheel built for an E31 will not bolt onto a modern G15. The lug bolt thread also shifted between eras (M12x1.5 on the E31, M14x1.25 on the modern G-chassis), so reusing lug bolts across the historical and modern 8 Series is not a clean swap. The historical E31 was sold in much smaller volume than the modern 8 Series and turns up infrequently in our catalog.

Why the Brake Package and Staggered Fitment Matter on the Modern 8 Series

The modern 8 Series ships must-staggered from the factory across the 840i, 840i with M-Sport Brakes, and M850i X-Drive. Rear wheel widths are wider than the front: 9.5 to 11 inch rear in our aftermarket window, compared to 8.5 to 9 inch front on the 840i and 9 to 10 inch front on the M850i. That staggered factory setup is part of how BMW engineered the grand tourer's rear-biased weight transfer and the rear axle's job under power. We do not recommend square setups on the modern 8 Series. The chassis is engineered around the staggered geometry.

The brake package changes the front clearance window on the 840i. The standard 840i carries a smaller front caliper than the M850i. BMW offers the 840i with M-Sport Brakes as a factory option, and that option carries the same brake hardware as the M850i. Specifically: the 840i M-Sport Brake car uses the M850i front brake setup. That means the wheel-face clearance window on the 840i M-Sport Brake matches the M850i, not the standard 840i. We track these as separate catalog rows. The front brake is larger than the rear on the M850i and on the 840i with M-Sport Brakes, which is normal on a grand tourer of this caliber. The front axle does most of the braking work and BMW scales the front rotor and caliper accordingly.

For the 8 Series that means clearance from the wheel to the fender, gap between the back of the wheel and the suspension, front brake caliper height (standard 840i vs M850i / M-Sport Brake), hub bore confirmation, lug seat geometry, turning clearance, and confirmation that the staggered front-vs-rear ratio fits the trim.
