BMW Z3 and Z4 Aftermarket Wheel Fitment

The BMW Z line is BMW's two-seat roadster from the late nineties through the current car. This consolidated hub covers the original Z3 (1996-2002) and every generation of Z4 that followed: the E85 / E86 Z4 (2002-2008), the E89 Z4 hardtop convertible (2009-2017), and the current G29 Z4 (2019 and up) that BMW co-developed with the Toyota Supra Mk5. The most important fact for a Z3 or Z4 wheel buyer is that BMW moved the bolt pattern at the G29 redesign. The Z3, the Z3M, the E85 / E86 Z4, the E89 Z4, and the Z4 M all ran 5x120 with a 72.56mm hub bore. The G29 Z4 (2019 and up) moved to 5x112 with a 66.56mm hub bore because it shares the chassis with the Toyota Supra and matches that platform's wheel spec. There is also a one-year production gap between the end of the E89 (2017) and the start of the G29 (2019). Pick your generation below for the fitment specs that apply to your specific car.

Find Your BMW Z3 or Z4 Generation

Pick your year range to see wheels and rims that fit your specific Z3 or Z4. The bolt pattern transitions at the G29 redesign in 2019 from 5x120 to 5x112. Each generation has its own measured offset window, and the Z3M, Z4 M, and the modern G29 SDrive M40i carry separate fitments with larger brake packages.

The BMW Z3 and Z4 Bolt Pattern

Every Z3 and every Z4 from 1996 through 2017 ran 5x120 with a 72.56mm hub bore. That covers the original Z3 (1996-2002), the Z3M (1997-2002), the E85 / E86 Z4 (2002-2008), the Z4 M (2006-2008), and the E89 Z4 hardtop convertible (2009-2017). The pattern matches the rest of BMW's E and F chassis era cars (E36 / E46 / E90 / E92 3 Series, E39 / E60 5 Series, E83 X3, E70 / F15 X5), and a wheel that fit those cars within their own offset windows will bolt onto a Z3 or Z4 of the same era.

The G29 Z4 (2019 and up) moved to 5x112 with a 66.56mm hub bore. This change happened because BMW co-developed the G29 with the Toyota Supra Mk5. The two cars share a chassis and BMW set the wheel spec to match. The G29 takes the same bolt pattern as the 2019 and newer BMW 3 Series (G20), 5 Series (G30 facelift / G60), and post-2018 X3 (G01) and X5 (G05). Because the G29 Z4 and the Mk5 Supra share the chassis, the same aftermarket wheels broadly cross between the two cars within their respective offset windows. A 5x120 wheel built for an E89 will not bolt onto a G29 under any circumstances. The lug holes do not line up.

Note the one-year gap between the end of E89 Z4 production (2017) and the start of G29 Z4 production (2019). There is no 2018 Z4. If you have a 2018-titled car listed as a Z4, it is either a leftover unsold E89 or a mislabel. Confirm the chassis code on the VIN before ordering wheels. Compare across the rest of the BMW lineup at our BMW wheels and rims hub.

Why the Z Generation, Brake Package, and Staggered Setup Matter

Every Z3 and Z4 is a rear-drive two-seat roadster, so the rear axle puts the power down and benefits from a wider tire footprint. The base Z3 and base Z4 (E85, E89, and G29 SDrive 30i) accept staggered builds as an option, and most aftermarket builds we ship on those cars do run a stagger. The M variants are different: the Z3M and Z4 M ship must-staggered from the factory and the G29 Z4 SDrive M40i is must-staggered as well, all three with a noticeably wider rear wheel and tire. On those three cars a square setup is not the right call. The brake package also matters on the M trims. The Z3M and Z4 M both run a larger brake package than the base car of the same generation. The G29 Z4 SDrive M40i runs a larger brake than the SDrive 30i. The larger brake takes more room behind the front wheel face and tightens the offset window.

How We Confirm Fitment on BMW Z3 and Z4 Wheels

Element Wheels measures fitment on the Z line directly across every generation we sell wheels for. For the Z3 and Z4 that means clearance from the wheel to the fender, gap between the back of the wheel and the suspension, brake caliper height with both base and M packages, hub bore confirmation (72.56mm on the 5x120 cars, 66.56mm on the G29), lug stud height, and turning clearance with the wheel and tire installed. At our fitment facility in Chandler, Arizona, the Element Wheels team measures directly on the physical platforms we support. We don't pull specs from manufacturer sheets the way most retailers do.

That measurement work is what produced the chassis-specific and brake-specific fitment windows on this page. It is also why every wheel we recommend is backed by our Fitment Guarantee. If a wheel does not fit, we pick up the wheels and refund 100 percent. No risk to you.

BMW Z3 and Z4 Wheels and Rims FAQ

What is the bolt pattern on a BMW Z3 or Z4?

It depends on the generation. The Z3 (1996-2002), the Z3M (1997-2002), the E85 / E86 Z4 (2002-2008), the Z4 M (2006-2008), and the E89 Z4 (2009-2017) all ran 5x120 with a 72.56mm hub bore. The G29 Z4 (2019 and up) moved to 5x112 with a 66.56mm hub bore on the BMW chassis it shares with the Toyota Supra Mk5. Confirm by chassis code or model year: anything 2017 and earlier is 5x120, anything 2019 and later is 5x112.

Will my E89 Z4 wheels fit a G29 Z4?

No. The E89 (2009-2017) is 5x120 / 72.56mm on the BMW chassis. The G29 (2019 and up) is 5x112 / 66.56mm on the BMW chassis it shares with the Toyota Supra. The studs are at different positions on the hub and the hub bore is a different diameter. The wheels do not cross between the two generations.

Will my G29 Z4 and Toyota Supra Mk5 share wheels?

Yes within the limits of brake package and offset window. The G29 Z4 and the Mk5 GR Supra were co-developed by BMW and Toyota and share the underlying chassis. Both run 5x112 with a 66.56mm hub bore. A wheel that fits a G29 Z4 SDrive 30i within its measured offset window will fit a Mk5 GR Supra 2.0. A wheel that fits a G29 Z4 SDrive M40i will fit a Mk5 GR Supra 3.0 with Brembo brakes. The 30i and the Supra 2.0 share a brake. The M40i and the Supra 3.0 Brembo share a brake. Both are must-staggered with a wider rear.

Are BMW Z3 and Z4 wheels staggered?

The base Z3, base E85 / E86 Z4, and E89 Z4 accept staggered as an option. Most aftermarket builds we ship on those cars do run a stagger because the chassis is rear-drive and the wider rear tire helps with grip. The M variants are different. The Z3M and Z4 M ship must-staggered from the factory and we recommend keeping that setup. The G29 Z4 SDrive 30i and SDrive M40i are both must-staggered from the factory with a noticeably wider rear.

What is the difference between base and M brake packages on the Z4?

The M variants (Z3M, Z4 M, G29 SDrive M40i) all ship with a larger front brake than the base car of the same generation. The larger calipers take more room behind the wheel face and tighten the offset window. A wheel that clears the base Z4 brake comfortably can foul the Z4 M caliper. The minimum diameter on the M cars is also a step up: the Z3M and Z4 M both start at 16 to 18 inch where the base Z3 / Z4 supports down to 16 inch, and the G29 M40i starts at 19 inch where the 30i supports 18 inch. We measure each separately.

What is the largest wheel I can fit on a Z3 or Z4?

Our measured aftermarket window tops at 19 inch on the Z3, Z3M, and E85 / E86 Z4, and 20 inch on the Z4 M, E89 Z4, and G29 Z4. The Z roadster has a tight fender opening compared to a sedan or SUV, and above the measured window the tire sidewall thins enough that ride quality drops sharply. Most aftermarket Z4 builds we ship stop at 19 or 20 inch and pick width and offset for the stance.

Do I need hub centric rings on a BMW Z3 or Z4?

It depends on your generation. On the Z3, Z3M, E85 / E86 Z4, Z4 M, and E89 Z4 (all 5x120), hub centric rings only when the aftermarket wheel has a centerbore larger than 72.56mm. On the G29 Z4 (5x112), hub centric rings only when the aftermarket wheel has a centerbore larger than 66.56mm. If your fitment needs rings, they'll be included with the order.

How do I find the right wheels for my specific BMW Z3 or Z4?

Confirm your generation by chassis code or model year (2017 and earlier is 5x120, 2019 and later G29 is 5x112). Confirm whether you have a base car or an M variant (Z3M, Z4 M, or G29 SDrive M40i) because the M cars ship must-staggered with a tighter brake clearance. Use our Year/Make/Model search to see wheels that fit your specific Z3 or Z4 (each listing publishes its own offset) and browse the wheel gallery for real-life builds. If you are uncertain which chassis your car sits on, contact our team for a free fitment consultation. Every wheel we recommend is backed by the Fitment Guarantee.
