The Chevrolet Astro was Chevy's mid-size body-on-frame van, in production from 1985 through the 2005 model year before Chevrolet discontinued the nameplate. The Astro is one of the few vans in our catalog that changed bolt pattern mid-run on the same chassis. The 1985-2002 Astro ran a 5-lug 5x127 pattern. For the 2002 model year overlap, Chevy moved the Astro to a 6-lug 6x139.7 pattern, and that 6-lug variant ran through 2005 until the van was discontinued. Hub bore stayed at 78.1mm across both eras. The 2002 model year is the overlap year for the bolt-pattern transition, so a quick visual check of the lug count is the fastest way to confirm which row your van falls into.

The Chevrolet Astro Bolt Pattern Transition

The Astro changed bolt pattern once across its production run, and the change happened mid-platform rather than at a chassis redesign. The 1985-2002 Astro ran 5x127 with a 78.1mm hub bore. 5x127 is the historical GM full-size truck and van pattern, also imperial-spec'd as 5x5 inches, and Chevy used it on the original Astro from launch in 1985 through the early-2002 production run. For the late-2002 model year forward, Chevy moved the Astro to a 6-lug 6x139.7 pattern (also imperial-spec'd as 6x5.5 inches) with the same 78.1mm hub bore. That 6-lug Astro ran through the 2005 model year, when Chevrolet discontinued the nameplate. The body-on-frame chassis itself did not change. The change was at the hub and wheel interface only.

Quick safety note on the Astro patterns. 5x127 (5x5 imperial) is NOT 5x114.3 (5x4.5 imperial) and it is NOT 5x120.65 (5x4.75 imperial). The three patterns are visually close on a hub but the stud spacing is different, and a 5x114.3 or 5x120.65 wheel will not bolt onto a 5x127 Astro. Confirm the millimeter spec on the wheel before buying. The 6x139.7 pattern on the late Astro is the same 6-lug pattern Chevrolet runs on the contemporary full-size Silverado / Suburban / Tahoe of the same era, and is also the same pattern used on the contemporary GMC Safari 6-lug. The detail buyers also miss: the 2002 model year is the transition year. Some 2002 Astros are 5-lug 5x127 and some 2002 Astros are 6-lug 6x139.7 depending on production timing. Count the studs on your van's hub before ordering. Five visible studs means 5x127. Six visible studs means 6x139.7.

Astro, Safari, and Aftermarket Sizing

The Chevrolet Astro and the GMC Safari are the same van under two nameplates. Same chassis, same body, same bolt-pattern transition (5x127 through early 2002, 6x139.7 from late 2002 through 2005), same 78.1mm hub bore. A wheel that fits a 5-lug Astro fits a 5-lug Safari, and a wheel that fits a 6-lug Astro fits a 6-lug Safari. The Safari has its own catalog row on the GMC side of our site, but the underlying fitment data is the same on the van itself.

The Astro runs square (same width front and rear) on every year. It is a body-on-frame passenger and cargo van where tire rotation between front and rear is part of the maintenance routine, and the van's drivetrain layouts (rear-wheel-drive on most trims, all-wheel-drive on AWD trims) both call for matched front and rear sizing. There is no factory staggered Astro in any year.
