Dodge Dakota Aftermarket Wheel Fitment
The Dodge Dakota is Chrysler's mid-size pickup, produced from 1987 through 2011 across three generations. Element Wheels measures fitment on the 1991-2004 Dakota (Gen 2) and the 2005-2010 Dakota (Gen 3). The unusual thing about the Dakota is that it changed bolt pattern at the 2005 redesign, going from a 6-lug 6x114.3 pattern on the older trucks to a 5-lug 5x139.7 pattern on the newer trucks. Most trucks don't change bolt pattern mid-life, and most that do change go from 5 to 6, not 6 to 5. The Dakota went the other way because the third generation moved onto a shared truck chassis with the larger Dodge Ram 1500. The hub bore changed too, from 71.5mm on the older trucks to 77.8mm on the newer trucks. Pick your year range below and you'll get wheels and rims sized for the right pattern.
Find Your Dodge Dakota Generation
Pick your year range to see wheels and rims that fit your specific Dakota. The pre-2005 truck is on the 6-lug 6x114.3 pattern with a 71.5mm hub bore. The 2005 and newer truck is on the 5-lug 5x139.7 pattern with a 77.8mm hub bore. These two patterns are not interchangeable and a wheel built for one will not bolt to the other.
The Dodge Dakota Bolt Pattern
The Dakota changed bolt pattern in the middle of its life, which makes this the single biggest fitment question on the truck. The 1991-2004 Dakota (Gen 2) runs 6x114.3 with a 71.5mm hub bore, 6 lugs, M12x1.5 lug nuts. The 2005-2010 Dakota (Gen 3) runs 5x139.7 with a 77.8mm hub bore, 5 lugs, M12x1.5 lug nuts. Counting the lugs on one wheel is the fastest field check. 6 lugs means a pre-2005 truck on the 6x114.3 pattern. 5 lugs means a 2005 or newer truck on the 5x139.7 pattern.
5x139.7 is also written as 5x5.5 in imperial (139.7mm equals 5.5 inches). Same pattern, two naming conventions. The 5x5.5 pattern on the 2005-2010 Dakota is the same pattern used on the Dodge Ram 1500 of the same era and on many other full-size and mid-size half-ton trucks, because the third generation Dakota moved onto a shared truck chassis with Ram. The 6x114.3 pattern on the older Dakota is more limited in the truck world and does not match the Ram 1500's pattern. Compare across the rest of the Dodge lineup at our Dodge wheels and rims hub.
Generation Differences Across the Dodge Dakota
The pre-2005 Dakota (the 1991-2004 Gen 2 truck) was the long-running version of the platform. Two door regular cab, four door club cab, and four door quad cab body styles. Rear wheel drive standard, 4WD optional across most trims. The R/T trim from 1998-2003 was the performance variant, a rear wheel drive only club cab with a lower ride height, the 5.9L Magnum V8, and the most aggressive factory wheel of the lineup. Every 1991-2004 Dakota we measure uses the same 6x114.3 / 71.5mm hub bore family, regardless of trim or drivetrain.
The 2005-2010 Dakota (Gen 3) was a ground-up redesign. Chrysler moved the Dakota onto a shared truck chassis with the Ram 1500, which is why the bolt pattern jumped to 5x139.7 and the hub bore widened to 77.8mm. Body styles condensed to four door club cab and four door quad cab. The 2-door regular cab was dropped. Rear wheel drive standard with 4WD optional, no R/T equivalent on this generation. Every 2005-2010 Dakota we measure uses the same 5x139.7 / 77.8mm hub bore family.

How We Confirm Fitment on Dodge Dakota Wheels
Element Wheels measures fitment on the Dakota directly, across the 1991-2004 6-lug truck and the 2005-2010 5-lug truck, and across both 2WD and 4WD configurations. For the Dakota that means hub bore confirmation (71.5mm on the older truck, 77.8mm on the newer truck), clearance from the wheel to the fender at full droop and full compression, gap between the back of the wheel and the suspension at full lock, brake caliper height, lug seat depth, and lug thread confirmation at M12x1.5. At our fitment facility in Chandler, Arizona, the Element Wheels team measures directly on the physical platforms we support. We don't pull these from manufacturer spec sheets the way most retailers do.
Dodge Dakota Wheels and Rims FAQ
What is the bolt pattern on a Dodge Dakota?
It depends on which truck you have. The 1991-2004 Dakota (Gen 2) uses 6x114.3 with a 71.5mm hub bore and 6 lugs. The 2005-2010 Dakota (Gen 3) uses 5x139.7 (also written as 5x5.5) with a 77.8mm hub bore and 5 lugs. The fastest check is to count the lugs on one wheel. 6 lugs means a pre-2005 truck. 5 lugs means a 2005 or newer truck.
Why did the Dakota change bolt pattern in 2005?
Chrysler redesigned the Dakota for the 2005 model year and moved it onto a shared truck chassis with the larger Dodge Ram 1500. The Ram 1500 was already on a 5x139.7 (5x5.5) hub at that point, so the Dakota inherited the same pattern. The hub bore widened from 71.5mm to 77.8mm at the same time. Most trucks don't change bolt pattern mid-life, and most that do change go from 5 lugs to 6 lugs. The Dakota went the other way because of the platform consolidation with Ram.
What is the hub bore on a Dodge Dakota?
1991-2004 Dakota uses a 71.5mm factory hub bore. 2005-2010 Dakota uses a 77.8mm factory hub bore. Like the bolt pattern, the hub bore changed when Chrysler moved the truck onto the Ram chassis for the third generation. If your fitment needs rings, they'll be included with the order.
Will Dodge Ram 1500 wheels fit a Dakota?
Sometimes, and only on the 2005-2010 Dakota. The third generation Dakota shares its 5x139.7 / 77.8mm hub family with the Ram 1500 of the same era, so the bolt math lines up. Offset, width, and brake clearance still need to be confirmed because the Dakota and Ram 1500 have different fender geometry and different brake packages. On a 1991-2004 Dakota the answer is no, because the older truck is on the 6x114.3 / 71.5mm hub and the Ram has never used that pattern in this era.
Does the Dakota R/T use a different bolt pattern from the base Dakota?
No. The Dakota R/T (1998-2003) uses the same 6x114.3 bolt pattern with 71.5mm hub bore and 6 lugs as every other 1991-2004 Dakota. What sets the R/T apart is the lowered ride height, the 5.9L Magnum V8, the rear wheel drive only configuration, and the more aggressive factory wheel choice. Bolt math is the same as the base truck of the same year.
What is the largest wheel I can fit on a Dodge Dakota?
22 inch is the top of our measured aftermarket window on both generations of the Dakota. Factory sizing ran 15 to 17 inch on the 1991-2004 truck and 16 to 18 inch on the 2005-2010 truck. 20 inch is the most common Dakota aftermarket choice. Going larger than 22 inch on a Dakota typically requires changes to suspension or fender clearance and is outside our measured fitment box.
Do 2WD and 4WD Dakotas use the same wheels?
Yes. 2WD and 4WD Dakotas of the same generation share the same bolt pattern, hub bore, diameter, width, and offset window. The drivetrain difference does not change the fitment box on the Dakota. The only meaningful spec swap is the bolt pattern itself, which changes at the 2005 generation cut, not by drivetrain.
Do I need hub centric rings on a Dodge Dakota?
Hub centric rings only when the aftermarket wheel has a centerbore larger than the truck's factory hub bore (71.5mm on the 1991-2004 truck, 77.8mm on the 2005-2010 truck). If your fitment needs rings, they'll be included with the order.
