The Ford Escape is Ford's compact crossover, in continuous production since the 2001 model year and currently in its 4th generation. The Escape has run through one major bolt pattern transition. The 1st gen (2001-2012, including the 1st gen Mazda Tribute and Mercury Mariner siblings) used the older Ford CD2 platform with a 5x114.3 bolt pattern. From 2013 forward, every Escape (2nd gen, 3rd gen, and 4th gen including the current ST-Line) moved to the Ford C2 / CD4 global platform and switched to 5x108. The 2013 transition is the single most important spec on this platform. From 2nd gen onward the Escape shares its C2 / CD4 architecture with the Ford Bronco Sport and the Ford Maverick. A wheel built for a 1st gen Escape will not bolt onto a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th gen Escape. The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gen Escape all share the same 5x108 / 63.4mm bolt math.

The Ford Escape Bolt Pattern

The Escape ran two different bolt patterns over its 25 year production. The 1st gen Escape (2001-2012) uses 5x114.3 with a 5 lug count and a 67.1mm hub bore, written 5x4.5 in imperial because 114.3mm equals 4.5 inches. The 2nd gen (2013-2019), 3rd gen (2020-2022), and 4th gen (2023 and up) Escape all use 5x108 with a 5 lug count and a 63.4mm hub bore, written 5x4.25 because 108mm equals roughly 4.25 inches. The transition happened when Ford moved the Escape onto the global C2 / CD4 platform for the 2013 model year. The two patterns do not interchange. A wheel built for a 1st gen Escape will not bolt onto any 2nd, 3rd, or 4th gen Escape, and vice versa.

The 2nd gen and newer Escape shares its 5x108 / 63.4mm spec with the Ford Bronco Sport and the Ford Maverick, both of which are built on the same C2 platform. The bolt math crosses between the three vehicles but the front fender, wheel arch package, brake setup, and suspension geometry are different. We measure each of the three C2 vehicles separately. Why the 2013 Escape Redesign Changed Wheel Buying

The 2013 redesign is the biggest fitment moment in the Escape's history. The 1st gen Escape sat on the older CD2 platform shared with the Mazda Tribute and the Mercury Mariner. The 1st gen was a body-on-frame style compact SUV with a more upright, truck-like shape and shipped with smaller factory wheels (16 inch was common on base trims, with 17 inch reserved for the higher-trim 1st gen). The 2nd gen Escape moved onto the global C2 / CD4 platform, lost the upright shape in favor of a lower car-like crossover stance, and shifted to the metric 5x108 bolt pattern that lives across the modern Ford C2 lineup. Hub bore dropped from 67.1mm on the 1st gen to 63.4mm on the 2nd gen.

The 4th gen Escape (2023 and up) added the ST-Line and ST-Line Elite trim packages, which are appearance and sport-tuned suspension trims rather than dedicated performance variants like the Edge ST or Explorer ST. The ST-Line trim ships on 18 inch factory wheels with a slightly more aggressive look but uses the same bolt pattern, hub bore, and brake package as the rest of the 4th gen Escape. The hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains (PHEV) share the same fitment box as the gas Escape. The battery sits low in the chassis and does not affect wheel clearance.
