Ford is one of the highest volume aftermarket platforms in our customer base. The F-150 is one of our highest volume aftermarket models, with the Mustang, F-250 and F-350 Super Duty, Bronco, and Explorer rounding out the bulk of the lineup. Older F-100 trucks, Crown Vics, and Thunderbirds still come through the shop with strong enthusiast interest. Ford fitment is harder than most platforms because the brand has changed bolt patterns on its highest volume model. The F-150 ran 5x135 from 1997 to 2003, then moved to 6x135 in 2004. The Super Duty F-250 and F-350 use 8x170, which crosses nowhere else in the lineup. The modern Bronco runs 6x139.7, the same pattern as the Ranger, while the smaller Bronco Sport runs 5x108. A wheel that fit your old F-150 will not bolt onto your new F-150 without checking the year. The Ford Bolt Pattern Landscape

Ford spreads its lineup across more bolt patterns than any other domestic automaker. There is no single Ford bolt pattern. The bolt pattern depends on which Ford platform you are buying for and, on the F-150, which year.

The takeaway is that wheels rarely cross between Ford platforms. Even within the same model, the F-150 has different bolt patterns before and after 2004. Always confirm year and platform before cross-shopping wheels between two Fords.

F-150 and Super Duty Wheel Fitment

The F-150 is one of the highest volume wheel platforms in Element's catalog, and it is also the model where customers make the most fitment mistakes. The 1997 to 2003 F-150 uses a 5x135 bolt pattern. The 2004 and newer F-150 moved to a 6x135 pattern with the redesign. Many customers shopping for an older truck assume the wheels they buy will fit a newer F-150 in the same body style range, and they will not. The lug count is different. The wheels do not bolt across.

The Super Duty F-250 and F-350 are an entirely different platform from the F-150. The Super Duty runs an 8 lug 8x170 bolt pattern that is unique to that truck line. F-150 wheels will not fit a Super Duty. Super Duty wheels will not fit an F-150. The Excursion built on the Super Duty frame from 2000 to 2005 shares the same 8x170 pattern. Within the Super Duty itself, the bolt pattern has been consistent across generations since 1999, but offset windows and brake clearances do shift between the older 7.3L Power Stroke trucks and the newer 6.7L Power Stroke trucks.

The Mustang runs cleaner fitment than the trucks. Every Mustang since 1994 has used the same 5x114.3 bolt pattern across SN95, S197, S550, and the current S650. The trim splits matter more than the year. Base, GT, Mach 1, Shelby, and the current Dark Horse all run different brake setups, with the Shelby GT350 and GT500 (2015-2022) carrying the largest factory brakes in their era and the Dark Horse taking that role on the current S650. How We Confirm Fitment

Element Wheels measures fitment on Ford models we sell wheels for. For each chassis and brake combination we measure clearance from the wheel to the fender, gap between the back of the wheel and any suspension components, brake caliper height, hub protrusion, lug height, and how much room the front wheel has when turning lock to lock. We do this on the car or the truck, not from a spec sheet.

That measurement work covers the most active Ford platforms across the catalog. F-150 5x135 trucks are tracked separately from F-150 6x135 trucks. F-150 base, FX4, Limited, and Raptor are tracked separately. Super Duty F-250 and F-350 are tracked separately from the F-150 because they are a different platform. Mustang base, GT, Mach 1, GT350, and GT500 are tracked separately by brake option. Bronco modern is tracked separately from Bronco Sport because they are different chassis. Our fitment recommendations come from these direct measurements rather than manufacturer spec sheets.
