The Safari is the GMC-badged twin of the Chevrolet Astro, sold across the same model years on the same chassis with the same bolt-pattern transition. The GMC Safari Bolt Pattern Transition

The Safari changed bolt pattern once across its production run, and the change happened mid-platform rather than at a chassis redesign. The 1995-2002 Safari ran 5x127 with a 78.1mm hub bore. 5x127 is the historical GM full-size truck and van pattern, also imperial-spec'd as 5x5 inches, and GMC used it on the Safari through the 2002 model year. For the 2003 model year forward, GMC moved the Safari to a 6-lug 6x139.7 pattern (also imperial-spec'd as 6x5.5 inches) with the same 78.1mm hub bore. That 6-lug Safari ran through the 2005 model year, when GMC discontinued the nameplate. The body-on-frame chassis itself did not change. The change was at the hub and wheel interface only.

Quick safety note on the Safari patterns. 5x127 (5x5 imperial) is NOT 5x114.3 (5x4.5 imperial) and it is NOT 5x120.65 (5x4.75 imperial). The three patterns are visually close on a hub but the stud spacing is different, and a 5x114.3 or 5x120.65 wheel will not bolt onto a 5x127 Safari. Confirm the millimeter spec on the wheel before buying. The 6x139.7 pattern on the late Safari is the same 6-lug pattern GM runs on the contemporary full-size Sierra / Yukon / Suburban of the same era. The detail buyers also miss: the 2002-to-2003 transition is the watershed year. Count the studs on your van's hub before ordering. Five visible studs means 5x127. Six visible studs means 6x139.7.

Safari, Astro, and Aftermarket Sizing

The GMC Safari and the Chevrolet Astro are the same van under two nameplates. Same chassis, same body, same bolt-pattern transition (5x127 through 2002, 6x139.7 from 2003 through 2005), same 78.1mm hub bore. A wheel that fits a 5-lug Safari fits a 5-lug Astro, and a wheel that fits a 6-lug Safari fits a 6-lug Astro. The Safari runs square (same width front and rear) on every year. It is a body-on-frame passenger and cargo van where tire rotation between front and rear is part of the maintenance routine, and the van's drivetrain layouts (rear wheel drive on most trims, all wheel drive on AWD trims) both call for matched front and rear sizing. There is no factory staggered Safari in any year.
