Element Wheels measures and publishes fitment for the third, fourth, and fifth generation Prelude, covering the 1988 through 2001 model years. The Prelude went through two bolt pattern changes in those thirteen years, more than most cars on the road. The 1988-1991 third gen (BA chassis) runs 4x100 with a 56.1mm hub bore. The 1992-1996 fourth gen (BB1/BB4 chassis) runs 4x114.3 with a 64.1mm hub bore. The 1997-2001 fifth gen (BB6/BB8 chassis, including the Type SH with Honda's Active Torque Transfer System) runs 5x114.3 with a 64.1mm hub bore. The fifth gen is the only Prelude that uses a 5-lug pattern. Every Prelude generation is non-staggered from the factory and every aftermarket build inside our window stays square. Count the lug studs to confirm: 4 studs means a 1988-1996 Prelude, 5 studs means a 1997-2001 Prelude (including the Type SH).

The Honda Prelude Bolt Pattern

The Honda Prelude went through two bolt pattern changes inside the years we measure. The third gen Prelude (1988-1991) shares the 4x100 / 56.1mm hub spec with the contemporary Civic and CRX of the same period. The fourth gen Prelude (1992-1996) moved up to 4x114.3 with a 64.1mm hub, the same pattern the rest of the 1990-2002 Honda mid-line ran. The fifth gen Prelude (1997-2001) shifted again to 5x114.3 with the same 64.1mm hub, which matched the Honda performance car standard of the era and what Honda eventually settled on for the entire mainstream lineup from 2003 forward. The thread pitch is M12x1.5 on every Prelude generation we carry.

One detail worth flagging because we see it confuse buyers on the fifth gen. 5x114.3 is NOT the same pattern as 5x115. The two sit roughly 0.7mm apart on the hub circle and a wheel built for one will not properly seat on the other. The 5x4.5 imperial nickname refers to 5x114.3 only (114.3mm equals 4.5 inches exactly). The 5x115 pattern lives on some American sedans like the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger and those wheels will not fit your Prelude. Why Generation and Type SH Matter

The Prelude is the rare car where the bolt pattern is the wrong question. Most cars run one bolt pattern across the lifetime of the nameplate. The Prelude ran three different patterns across our measured window: 4x100 on the third gen, 4x114.3 on the fourth gen, and 5x114.3 on the fifth gen. The hub bore also shifted from 56.1mm on the third gen up to 64.1mm on the fourth and fifth gen. Confirming the year first is the only safe path. A wheel that fits a 1991 Prelude will not fit a 1992 Prelude and a wheel that fits a 1996 Prelude will not fit a 1997 Prelude. The lug count is the quickest tell from the driveway: 4 studs is 1988-1996, 5 studs is 1997-2001.

The fifth gen Type SH (Super Handling) is the enthusiast pick of the lineup. Honda fitted the Type SH with the Active Torque Transfer System, a mechanical front limited-slip arrangement that biases torque side-to-side to sharpen turn-in on a front wheel drive chassis. For wheel fitment purposes the Type SH shares the 5x114.3 / 64.1mm hub and the 5-lug pattern with the standard 1997-2001 Prelude. The aftermarket fitment box is the same. The Type SH does not change the wheel decision.
