Jeep Cherokee Aftermarket Wheel Fitment

The Jeep Cherokee name covers two completely different vehicles in our catalog, and the wheel fitment between them does not cross. The classic Cherokee XJ (1986-2002) is a body-on-frame Jeep with a 5x114.3 (5x4.5) bolt pattern and a 71.5mm hub bore. The modern Cherokee KL (2014-2023) is a unibody crossover built on the Fiat-derived CUSW platform with a 5x110 bolt pattern and a 65.1mm hub bore. Both are discontinued from new-car production. The XJ went away in 2002 when Jeep killed off the original SUV. The KL went away in 2023 when Jeep wound the modern Cherokee out of the lineup to make room for the newer Compass and Grand Cherokee positioning. The two trucks are not the same car. They share a name and nothing else. Pick the chassis below and the fitment specifics follow. The smaller Cherokee is distinct from the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which is its own model with its own fitment hub.

Find Your Jeep Cherokee Chassis

Pick your chassis to see wheels and rims that fit your specific Cherokee. The XJ and the KL run different bolt patterns, different hub bores, and different lug specs, so the fitment selection lives on separate leaves. If you are not sure which Cherokee you have, the XJ is body-on-frame with a square boxy profile that ended in 2002, and the KL is the rounded unibody crossover that started in 2014 and ended in 2023.

The Jeep Cherokee Bolt Pattern

The Cherokee XJ (1986-2002) uses 5x114.3 with a 71.5mm hub bore. The imperial nickname for 5x114.3 is 5x4.5 because 114.3 millimeters is exactly 4.5 inches. The 5x4.5 pattern is the most common American compact and midsize pattern, and the XJ shares it with a long list of classic Mopar and Ford vehicles. Lug spec on the XJ is M12x1.5. A wheel built for any 5x114.3 vehicle of the era will bolt onto an XJ hub by bolt pattern alone, though offset windows and brake clearance still need to match.

The Cherokee KL (2014-2023) uses 5x110 with a 65.1mm hub bore. The 5x110 pattern is the Fiat-Jeep CUSW platform spec for the era. It is shared with the Jeep Renegade and the Jeep Compass of the same generation, plus a number of Fiat and Alfa Romeo vehicles. It is not shared with any older Jeep, and it is not the 5x4.5 American compact pattern. Lug spec on the KL is M12x1.25. The smaller hub bore (65.1mm vs 71.5mm on the XJ) reflects the unibody car-based chassis the KL was built on, not the truck chassis of the XJ.

The two Cherokees do not share wheels. A 5x114.3 XJ wheel will not fit a 5x110 KL hub because the bolt circle is wrong. A 5x110 KL wheel will not fit a 5x114.3 XJ hub for the same reason. Match the chassis. Compare against the rest of the Jeep lineup at our Jeep wheels and rims hub.

Why the XJ and KL Are Two Different Vehicles

The XJ Cherokee is the original. Jeep built it on a unitized body-on-frame design in production from 1984 (1986 in our catalog) through 2001, with some leftover 2002 examples. It carried the classic boxy SUV shape, the 4.0L inline six on most US trims, and a solid rear axle on a full off-road-capable platform. The XJ became the template for what a compact American SUV could be and built a strong collector and overland community that is still active today. Stock wheels were typically 15 to 16 inch with a 5x114.3 / 5x4.5 pattern shared with a wide range of Mopar and Ford compacts of the era.

The KL Cherokee is the modern car-based crossover. Jeep built it on the Fiat-derived CUSW (Compact US Wide) platform that also underpins the Jeep Renegade and the Jeep Compass of the same generation. The KL was built from 2014 through 2023, then discontinued. It uses a unibody construction, a transverse engine, and a car-platform 5x110 bolt pattern that has no relationship to the XJ. The Trailhawk trim adds an off-road package (active drive lock, hill descent, skid plates, a meaningful approach angle improvement) within the same chassis fitment window. Our catalog treats the KL as a single fitment leaf covering all trims including the Trailhawk.

How We Confirm Fitment on Jeep Cherokee Wheels

Element Wheels measures fitment on the platforms we sell wheels for, including both the XJ and the KL Cherokee. For the XJ that means clearance from the wheel to the boxy factory fender, gap behind the wheel to the solid rear axle, brake caliper clearance on the body-on-frame setup, hub protrusion at the 71.5mm bore, and lug seat depth for the M12x1.5 studs. For the KL it means the same set of measurements applied to the unibody chassis at the 65.1mm hub bore and the M12x1.25 lug spec, plus the Trailhawk off-road package geometry where the suspension lift and the skid plates can change rear inner clearance. At our fitment facility in Chandler, Arizona, the Element Wheels team measures directly on the physical platforms we support. We don't pull specs from manufacturer sheets the way most retailers do.

Jeep Cherokee Wheels and Rims FAQ

What is the bolt pattern on a Jeep Cherokee?

It depends on the chassis. The Cherokee XJ (1986-2002) uses 5x114.3 (also called 5x4.5) with a 71.5mm hub bore. The Cherokee KL (2014-2023) uses 5x110 with a 65.1mm hub bore. The two trucks do not share wheels. Confirm whether your Cherokee is the boxy body-on-frame XJ or the rounded unibody KL before ordering.

Is the Cherokee the same as the Grand Cherokee?

No. The Cherokee and the Grand Cherokee are two different vehicles. The Grand Cherokee is the larger Jeep SUV that has been in continuous production from 1993 to today, on a 5x127 (5x5) bolt pattern. The Cherokee covered here is the smaller of the two: the XJ (1986-2002) on 5x114.3 and the KL (2014-2023) on 5x110. Wheels do not cross between the Cherokee and the Grand Cherokee. See our Jeep Grand Cherokee hub for the larger vehicle.

Will XJ wheels fit a KL Cherokee?

No. The XJ uses 5x114.3 and the KL uses 5x110. The bolt circles are different and the wheels physically cannot mount across the two chassis. The hub bores are also different (71.5mm on the XJ, 65.1mm on the KL) and the lug threads are different (M12x1.5 on the XJ, M12x1.25 on the KL). They share a name and nothing else in fitment terms.

Does the Trailhawk trim change the wheel I can buy?

Not at the bolt-pattern level. The Trailhawk is the off-road trim of the KL Cherokee. It shares the 5x110 / 65.1mm bolt pattern and hub bore with every other KL trim. The Trailhawk adds suspension travel, skid plates, the active drive lock transfer case, and slightly taller all-terrain tires from the factory. Our catalog treats the KL as a single fitment leaf covering the Trailhawk and the standard KL. Trailhawk owners running tall mud or all-terrain tires should verify wheel-to-tire matching with our team before ordering, since the off-road package shifts the practical tire selection window.

Are Cherokee wheels staggered?

No. Both the XJ and the KL run square fitments (same wheel width front and rear). Neither chassis was engineered around a staggered setup. The XJ is a body-on-frame SUV with a solid rear axle, and the KL is a transverse-engine unibody crossover. Our published windows on both are square front-and-rear width.

What size wheels and tires came on the Jeep Cherokee from the factory?

The XJ Cherokee shipped on 15 inch wheels through most of the run, with 16 inch on later trim packages. Tires were typically 225/75R15 or 30x9.50R15 on Country and Sport trim packages. The KL Cherokee shipped on 17 inch wheels as the standard size, 18 inch on Limited and higher trims, and 17 inch on the Trailhawk (paired with all-terrain tires). Latitude and Limited KL tires were typically 225/55R18 or 235/55R18. Trailhawk wore 245/65R17 all-terrains.

What is the largest wheel I can fit on a Jeep Cherokee?

Our measured aftermarket window tops at 22 inch diameter on both the XJ and the KL. Most XJ overland and street builds land at 16 to 17 inch to keep usable tire sidewall for off-road duty. Most KL street builds land at 18 to 20 inch. Above 22 inch the available tire options become difficult to source for either chassis.

Do I need hub centric rings on a Jeep Cherokee?

Hub centric rings only when the aftermarket wheel has a centerbore larger than the Cherokee's. The XJ hub bore is 71.5mm, so rings only if the wheel centerbore is larger than 71.5mm. The KL hub bore is 65.1mm, so rings only if the wheel centerbore is larger than 65.1mm. If your fitment needs rings, they'll be included with the order.

Get Jeep Cherokee Wheels Right the First Time

Pick your chassis above (XJ or KL) to see wheels and rims that fit. We measure on both Cherokees directly, track the XJ's 5x114.3 / 71.5mm body-on-frame fitment separately from the KL's 5x110 / 65.1mm unibody fitment, and call out the Trailhawk off-road geometry on the KL. Find your fit and start enjoying your build sooner.
