The Aviator is one of the more unusual platforms in the Lincoln catalog because the nameplate sat dormant for 15 model years between the original (2003-2005) and the modern revival (2020 and up). The two generations share the bolt pattern (5x114.3) and the hub bore (70.5mm), but the platform underneath is completely different. The 1st gen rides on the Ford U152 body on frame midsize SUV platform shared with the 4th gen Ford Explorer. The 2nd gen rides on the Ford CD6 unibody three row luxury platform shared with the 6th gen Ford Explorer. The lug thread on the 2nd gen is M14x1.5. The original 1st gen used M12x1.5 lug threads per the Ford U152 spec.

Factory wheel sizes track the platform change. The 1st gen Aviator shipped on 17 inch wheels from the factory across all trims and our measured Element aftermarket window extends from 16 inch up to 23 inch for full custom builds. The 2nd gen Aviator shipped on factory 19, 20, 21, and 22 inch wheels depending on trim (Standard, Reserve, Grand Touring PHEV, and Black Label). Black Label trims got the 22 inch as standard. Customers shop the 2nd gen for a more aggressive face style than the factory wheel, a deeper concave look, and a step up in diameter on Standard and Reserve trims to match the 22 inch Black Label footprint. The original 2003-2005 Aviator audience today is more restoration and OEM upgrade oriented, with most builds staying in the 18 to 20 inch range. Neither generation runs a staggered fitment from the factory and the aftermarket also stays square.
