The Mazda RX-8 Bolt Pattern and Hub Bore

Every Mazda RX-8 from 2004 to 2011 runs 5x114.3 with a 67.1mm hub bore and 12x1.5 lug nuts. The 5x114.3 bolt pattern is also written as 5x4.5 in imperial nickname (114.3mm equals 4.5 inches). Be careful with the common mix-up: 5x114.3 is NOT the same as 5x115. Those two patterns are 0.7mm apart at the bolt circle and they do not cross. The imperial 5x4.5 nickname refers only to 5x114.3.

The 5x114.3 / 67.1mm spec is the same hub interface Mazda used on the 2006-2015 NC MX-5 Miata. The RX-8 and the NC Miata share the chassis platform underpinnings, which is why the lug count and hub bore line up between the two cars. At the wheel-fitment level the two are different chassis with different fender geometry, suspension travel, and curb weight, and Element catalogs them as separate fitment families. The lug-pattern math crosses. The fitment box does not.

Square or Staggered, and What the R3 Trim Changes

The RX-8 ships from the factory with square 18-inch wheels. The chassis is balanced enough that square is correct for most use cases. The aftermarket community more often runs staggered setups on the RX-8 because the rear fender well accepts a 10 inch wide rear without rubbing, and the staggered look pairs with the wide rear hips on the body. Element supports both. The fitment catalog row for the RX-8 has separate front and rear width windows: the front allows 8 to 9 inch wide, the rear allows 9 to 10 inch wide. A square build picks a width inside both windows, like 18x8.5 or 19x9 four corners. A staggered build picks the front from the front window and the rear from the rear window, like 19x8.5 front with 19x10 rear.

The brake package on every RX-8 is matched front to rear. There is no Brembo trim or factory big-brake option on the RX-8 that splits fitment by trim. The 2009-2011 R3 trim that arrived with the post-2008 facelift adds a stiffer suspension package and the Recaro front seats, but it does not change the brake package or the bolt pattern. The R3 uses the same 18-inch factory wheel size as the other RX-8 trims.
