The Nissan Altima Bolt Pattern Changes Between Generations

The Altima has one bolt pattern transition in its history. The 1st gen Altima (1993-2001) ran 4x114.3 with 4 lugs and a 66.1mm hub bore. Starting with the L31 (2002 and up), Nissan moved the Altima to 5 lugs on a 5x114.3 pattern with the same 66.1mm hub bore. The five-lug spec is stable across the L31 (2002-2006), L32 (2007-2012), the 2008-2014 L32 Altima Coupe, the L33 (2013-2018), and the current L34 (2019 and up). Lug thread is M12x1.25 across every Altima generation. The 1st gen and 2002 and up are different bolt patterns and the wheels do not interchange.

On the 2002 and up Altima, 5x114.3 carries the 5x4.5 imperial nickname (114.3mm equals exactly 4.5 inches), which is where wheel listings sometimes show "5x4.5" instead of the metric callout. 5x114.3 is the most common 5-lug Japanese bolt pattern, used across the Nissan, Honda, Toyota, Mazda, and Mitsubishi lineups. The detail that trips buyers. 5x114.3 is NOT the same as 5x115 used on some American sedans like the Chrysler 300 and the Dodge Charger LX. The two patterns sit only 0.7mm apart but they do not bolt across; the studs will not line up at that spacing. The 5x4.5 imperial nickname refers specifically to 5x114.3.

Why the Altima Generation Determines Wheel Fit

The Altima is a front-wheel-drive sedan that has run the same 5x114.3 / 66.1mm spec from the L31 through the current L34, but the platforms underneath have changed considerably. The L31 (2002-2006) opened the modern Altima as a five-lug sedan. The L32 (2007-2012) widened the wheel window to 9 inch on the sedan and added the two-door Altima Coupe (2008-2014) with a distinct rear width window up to 10 inch. The L33 (2013-2018) and the current L34 (2019 and up) carry a stable 16 to 20 inch aftermarket diameter window and a 7 to 9 inch width window square front and rear. Each generation has its own measured offset range even though the wheels bolt across in stud pattern. The SR trim on the modern Altima is a sport-styled package and a CVT calibration; the base brake hardware on the SR matches the rest of the L33 and L34 lineup, so wheel face clearance follows the standard generation window.

The 2008-2014 Altima Coupe is the one variant in the Altima lineup that supports an optional rear-staggered fitment. The Sedan is square across every generation. The Coupe carries a wider rear wheel window (up to 10 inch wide rear vs 9 inch front) for builds that want a poked-rear stance. Both the Coupe and the rest of the Altima lineup share the 5x114.3 / 66.1mm bolt pattern and hub bore, but the Coupe rear width is the one variant detail worth flagging when ordering wheels.
