Pontiac Firebird Aftermarket Wheel Fitment
The Pontiac Firebird ran for 35 years across four generations, from the 1967 first-gen launch through the 2002 fourth-gen finale. This hub covers every Firebird and every Trans Am, because the Trans Am is a Firebird trim package, not a separate model. The Pontiac GTO (2004-2006 Holden Monaro rebadge) was a separate model and is covered on its own hub. Every Firebird ever built uses the GM legacy 5x120.65 (5x4.75) bolt pattern with a 70.3mm hub bore, the same pattern shared with the Camaro and the GM A-body and F-body family. What changes generation to generation is the fitment window, wheel size range, and whether the staggered setup is mandatory or optional. Element Wheels has measured fitments on every Firebird generation we carry. Pick your generation below.
Find Your Pontiac Firebird Generation
Pick your year range to see wheels and rims that fit your specific Firebird. Bolt pattern stays 5x120.65 across every generation, including every Trans Am. What changes is wheel diameter range and whether the build runs square or staggered.
The Pontiac Firebird Bolt Pattern
Every Pontiac Firebird from 1967 through the final 2002 fourth-gen Trans Am used the GM legacy 5x120.65 bolt pattern, also written as 5x4.75 in imperial. The hub bore is 70.3mm across every generation. This is the same factory pattern that ran on the Chevrolet Camaro across the same year span, since the Firebird and Camaro shared the GM F-body platform from launch through the 2002 retirement of both nameplates.
What this means for wheel buyers: any wheel sold as fitting the 5x120.65 GM F-body pattern will bolt to any Firebird across the four generations. What changes is the offset window, brake clearance, and how wide a tire the fenders can take. Those constraints tighten on the third and fourth-gen cars that have factory disc brakes and tighter wheel wells, and they loosen on the long-body second-gen Trans Am that has the room to swallow a wider rear tire.
Trans Am and Why the Firebird Cast a Long Shadow
The Trans Am started as a 1969 performance trim package on the first-gen Firebird and became the icon of the second-gen run. Burt Reynolds drove a 1977 Trans Am in Smokey and the Bandit. KITT was a third-gen 1982 Trans Am on Knight Rider. The Screaming Chicken hood graphic, the shaker scoop, the WS6 handling package, the Ram Air heritage, all of it lives under the Firebird nameplate. The Formula, Firehawk, and the Ram Air-equipped WS6 packages filled out the special-trim history across the four generations.
For wheel buyers, the practical thing to know is the entire Firebird and Trans Am lineage shares the 5x120.65 bolt pattern. A wheel bought for a Trans Am bolts to a base Firebird and vice versa. What changes is the visual era. First-gen restorations lean toward 14 to 17 inch wheels and period-correct designs. Second-gen Bandit-era Trans Am builds run 15 to 18 inch sizes, often staggered with a wider rear to fit the muscle-car stance under the long fenders. Third and fourth-gen cars commonly go 17 to 18 inch and sometimes 20 inch on restomod builds, with the modern aftermarket window built around the disc brake clearance.
Element Wheels measured aftermarket fitment, Pontiac Firebird and Trans Am
Publishable factory and wheel specs across all four generations:
- Bolt pattern: 5x120.65 (5x4.75) with 70.3mm hub bore across every generation
- 1st Gen (1967-1969) aftermarket diameter: 14 to 20 inch, square setup, 7 to 8 inch width
- 2nd Gen (1970-1981) aftermarket diameter: 14 to 20 inch, staggered option (7 to 8.5 front, 8 to 10 rear)
- 3rd Gen (1982-1992) aftermarket diameter: 15 to 20 inch, square setup, 6 to 9 inch width
- 4th Gen (1993-2002) aftermarket diameter: 16 to 20 inch, staggered option (7 to 10 front, 8 to 10.5 rear)
Offset windows are tightly controlled and depend on your brake setup, ride height, and build goal. For your exact offset, three options:
- 1. Use our Year/Make/Model search to see wheels that fit your specific Firebird or Trans Am (each listing shows its own offset).
- 2. Browse the Firebird wheel gallery for real-life builds with size, offset, and tire spec captions.
- 3. Call or chat with our team for a free fitment consultation.
How We Confirm Fitment on Pontiac Firebird Wheels
Element Wheels measures fitment on the platforms we sell wheels for, including every Firebird and Trans Am generation. For these cars that means clearance from the wheel to the fender, gap between the back of the wheel and the suspension, brake caliper clearance (drum on the earlier first-gen, disc on later second-gen and forward), hub bore confirmation on the 70.3mm GM hub, lug stud height, and turning clearance with the wheel and tire installed. We measure on the cars in our network. We do not pull these from manufacturer spec sheets the way most retailers do.
That measurement work is what produced the generation-specific fitment windows on this page. It is also why every wheel we recommend is backed by our Fitment Guarantee. If a wheel does not fit, we pick up the wheels and refund 100 percent. No risk to you. Compare against the rest of the Pontiac lineup at our Pontiac wheels and rims hub.
Pontiac Firebird Wheels and Rims FAQ
What is the bolt pattern on a Pontiac Firebird?
Every Pontiac Firebird ever built uses 5x120.65 (also written 5x4.75) with a 70.3mm hub bore. That covers the 1st gen (1967-1969), 2nd gen (1970-1981), 3rd gen (1982-1992), and 4th gen (1993-2002). The same pattern is the factory spec on every Trans Am, since the Trans Am is a Firebird trim package, not a separate model.
Do Firebird and Trans Am use different wheels?
No. The Trans Am is a Firebird performance trim package, not a separate model. Every Trans Am from the 1969 launch through 2002 shares the Firebird chassis, the 5x120.65 bolt pattern, the 70.3mm hub bore, and the basic fitment window for its generation. What differs is the factory wheel design and sometimes the WS6 handling package fitment. Any aftermarket wheel that bolts to a base Firebird bolts to a Trans Am of the same year.
Does the Camaro share wheels with the Firebird?
The Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird shared the GM F-body chassis through 2002 and used the same 5x120.65 bolt pattern with a 70.3mm hub bore. A 5x120.65 wheel that bolts to one will bolt to the other from the same era. The fender clearance and wheel well dimensions are nearly identical generation to generation, but verify by your specific year and trim because brake packages and suspension setups differ slightly between the two.
What is the largest wheel I can fit on a Firebird?
Our measured aftermarket window tops at 20 inch diameter across every Firebird generation. Above 20 inch the tire sidewall thins enough that ride quality drops sharply, and on the first-gen and second-gen cars the larger diameters start fighting the factory fender lip. Most restoration buyers stop at 17 to 18 inch for period correctness, and most restomod builds land at 18 to 20 inch.
Are Pontiac Firebird wheels staggered?
It depends on the generation. The 1st gen and 3rd gen ran square from the factory (same width front and rear). The 2nd gen (1970-1981) and the 4th gen (1993-2002) both offer staggered as an option, with a wider rear wheel for the muscle-car stance. The Bandit-era second-gen Trans Am with the wider rear axle and the fourth-gen WS6 and Firehawk cars are the two generations where staggered fitment is most common on the aftermarket.
What is the OEM offset on a Firebird?
Factory OEM offset on the first-gen and second-gen Firebird sat near zero, in the +0 to +6mm range, typical of the GM F-body era. The third-gen and fourth-gen cars moved to a more modern positive offset in the +30 to +45mm range to fit the inboard disc brake setup. For your exact aftermarket offset, the cleanest paths are searching wheels by your year and trim (each listing publishes its own offset), browsing real-life builds in the wheel gallery, or contacting our team for a free fitment consultation.
Do I need hub centric rings on a Firebird?
Hub centric rings only when the aftermarket wheel has a centerbore larger than 70.3mm. If your fitment needs rings, they'll be included with the order.
How do I find wheels for my specific Firebird or Trans Am?
Pick your generation above. Each page covers the years we have measured with bolt pattern, factory wheel size, aftermarket diameter and width ranges, and brake clearance specifics. If you are not sure whether you have a Firebird, a Formula, a Trans Am, or a WS6 / Firehawk variant, our team can identify your exact car from the VIN. Every wheel we recommend is backed by the Fitment Guarantee.
