Saab 9-2X Aftermarket Wheel Fitment

The Saab 9-2X is one of the most distinctive cars in the Saab US lineup. Sold for the 2005 and 2006 model years only, the 9-2X is the second generation Subaru Impreza wagon (GG body) wearing Saab badges, sold by Saab during the GM ownership era. Element Wheels measures fitment on the 9-2X from our fitment facility in Chandler, Arizona. The Aero trim is the Subaru Impreza WRX underneath, including the turbocharged EJ20 boxer and the symmetric AWD system. The Linear trim is the naturally aspirated 2.5L Subaru Impreza 2.5i underneath. Both trims are AWD, both run square fitment, and both share the same Subaru fitment geometry. The car is often called the "Saabaru" by the enthusiast community, which is a fair name: every mechanical part of the 9-2X is Subaru, including everything that affects wheel fitment.

Because the 9-2X is a Subaru Impreza underneath, the fitment specs follow the Subaru side, not the Saab side. The 9-2X uses 5x100 with a 56.1mm hub bore and M12x1.25 lug nuts (not bolts). This is the Subaru convention. The rest of the US-market Saab lineup of the same era (9-3, 9-5 1st gen) uses lug bolts in the European convention and a different bolt pattern. Wheels from a 9-3 or 9-5 will not bolt onto a 9-2X.

The 9-2X is a Subaru Impreza WRX (Aero) or Impreza 2.5i (Linear)

The Saab 9-2X exists because of cross-ownership between GM and Subaru during the early 2000s. Saab needed an entry-level all wheel drive car for the US market quickly, and Subaru had one ready in the GG-chassis Impreza wagon. Saab took the Impreza, reskinned the front clip with Saab-style headlights and a Saab grille, badged the back, and sold it through Saab dealers. The 2005 and 2006 model years were the only ones produced before Saab discontinued the 9-2X.

The Saab 9-2X Aero is the Subaru Impreza WRX (GG-chassis, 2002-2007 generation). Same 2.0L turbocharged EJ20 boxer, same drivetrain, same brakes, same suspension geometry. If a wheel and tire setup works on a 2005 Subaru Impreza WRX wagon, it works on a 2005 Saab 9-2X Aero, because they are the same car. The Saab 9-2X Linear is the Subaru Impreza 2.5i (GG-chassis, naturally aspirated 2.5L SOHC). Same wheels, same fitment specs. The styling difference between the Aero and the Linear is mostly trim and the absence of a hood scoop on the Linear. Mechanically they are an Impreza WRX and an Impreza 2.5i wagon respectively.

The practical implication for wheel shopping: the aftermarket pool for the 9-2X is much larger than the Saab badge alone would suggest. Any wheel listed for the 2005-2006 Subaru Impreza or Impreza WRX wagon (GG-chassis) is geometry-compatible with the 9-2X. We catalog the 9-2X under its own Saab fitment row, but every wheel listing on our 9-2X page is the same wheel that would show on the equivalent Impreza WRX listing. For Subaru WRX fitment context across newer generations, see our Subaru WRX wheels and rims hub.

The Saab 9-2X Bolt Pattern and Lug Geometry

The 9-2X uses 5x100 with a 56.1mm hub bore. The lug geometry is M12x1.25 lug nuts on studs, in the Subaru convention. This is the same bolt pattern, hub bore, and lug geometry used by every base Subaru Impreza and base Impreza WRX from the GG generation (2002-2007), including the 9-2X Aero and Linear. The 5x100 pattern is also shared with the older naturally aspirated Imprezas (1993-2014), the Subaru BRZ, the Toyota 86, and the Toyota Corolla of the same era.

One important distinction: the 5x100 pattern on the 9-2X is a different pattern from the 5x114.3 used by the Subaru Impreza WRX STI of the same era. The STI (the higher-performance Impreza variant) was 5x114.3 from its 2004 US debut. The base WRX, including every wheel-fitment-equivalent 9-2X Aero, is 5x100. A STI wheel will not bolt onto a 9-2X. A 5x100 wheel listed for a 2005-2006 base WRX wagon will bolt onto a 9-2X Aero, geometry permitting.

Lug geometry: M12x1.25 lug nuts on studs. The 9-2X follows the Subaru side of its lineage here, not the Saab side. The rest of the US-market Saab lineup of the same era (9-3, 9-5 1st gen) uses M12x1.5 lug bolts in the European convention. If you are coming to the 9-2X from a 9-3 or a 9-5, the install experience is different: there are wheel studs to slide the wheel onto on the 9-2X, where the 9-3 and 9-5 require you to support the wheel while starting the bolts. Compare across the rest of the Saab lineup at our Saab wheels and rims hub.

Why the Saab 9-2X Runs Square Fitment

Every Saab 9-2X is Subaru symmetric all wheel drive from the factory, because every 9-2X is a Subaru Impreza underneath. Subaru's symmetric AWD uses a longitudinally mounted boxer engine paired with a center differential and front-rear torque split. That drivetrain requires matched circumference at all four corners. A wheel and tire combo that is taller in the rear than the front (or vice versa) confuses the center diff and stresses the transfer case over miles. Square fitment is not optional on a 9-2X, it is the engineering constraint inherited from the Impreza platform. The Element catalog row for the 9-2X reflects this: matched front-rear width, no staggered option, matched front-rear brake.

The brake package is matched front to rear across both the Aero and the Linear. The 9-2X Aero (the WRX variant) has the WRX's larger front brake but the rear is sized appropriately, and the diameter window stays open from 16 inch up. The Linear has the base Impreza's smaller brake package and is even more permissive. We measure each variant directly, which is what produced the publishable factory and aftermarket window below.

Element Wheels Measured Aftermarket Fitment, Saab 9-2X

Publishable factory and wheel specs for the Saab 9-2X:

  • 2005-2006 Saab 9-2X (Aero and Linear): 5x100 bolt pattern, 56.1mm hub bore, M12x1.25 lug nuts on studs. Element aftermarket diameter range: 16-18 inch. Aftermarket width: 6-8 inch front and rear. Square fitment (Subaru symmetric AWD constraint). Matched front-rear brake.

For your exact aftermarket offset, three options:

  • 1. Use our Year/Make/Model search to see wheels that fit your specific 9-2X (each listing shows its own offset).
  • 2. Browse the Saab 9-2X wheel gallery for real-life builds with size, offset, and tire spec captions.
  • 3. Call or chat with our team for a free fitment consultation.

Every wheel we recommend is backed by our Fitment Guarantee. If a wheel does not fit, we pick up the wheels and refund 100 percent. No risk to you.

How We Confirm Fitment on Saab 9-2X Wheels

Element Wheels measures fitment on the platforms we sell wheels for, including the Saab 9-2X. For the 9-2X that means clearance from the wheel to the fender, gap between the back of the wheel and the suspension, brake caliper height (smaller on the Linear, larger on the Aero / WRX), hub bore confirmation (56.1mm, matching the Subaru Impreza platform), lug seat geometry, and confirmation that the wheel and tire match circumference front to rear so the symmetric AWD system stays balanced. At our fitment facility in Chandler, Arizona, the Element Wheels team measures directly on the physical platforms we support. We don't pull specs from manufacturer sheets the way most retailers do. Because the 9-2X is mechanically a Subaru Impreza wagon, the measurements also carry across to the 2005-2006 Subaru Impreza and Impreza WRX wagon (GG-chassis) of the same era.

Saab 9-2X Wheels and Rims FAQ

What is the bolt pattern on a Saab 9-2X?

5x100 with a 56.1mm hub bore, on both the Aero and the Linear trims of the 2005-2006 9-2X. The lug geometry is M12x1.25 lug nuts on studs, in the Subaru convention. This is the Subaru Impreza WRX (or base 2.5i) bolt pattern, not the European 5x110 pattern used on the Saab 9-3 or 9-5 1st gen.

Is the Saab 9-2X really a Subaru Impreza WRX?

Yes. The 9-2X Aero is the Subaru Impreza WRX wagon (GG-chassis, 2002-2007 generation) with Saab front-end styling and badging. The 9-2X Linear is the Subaru Impreza 2.5i wagon (same GG-chassis, naturally aspirated 2.5L SOHC engine). Mechanically the 9-2X is a Subaru in every way that affects wheel fitment. Saab sourced the car from Subaru during the GM ownership era and sold it under Saab dealers for the 2005 and 2006 model years only. The enthusiast nickname is "Saabaru."

Does the Saab 9-2X use lug bolts or lug nuts?

Lug nuts on studs, in the Subaru convention. Thread pitch is M12x1.25. This is different from the rest of the US-market Saab lineup of the same era. The 9-3 and the 9-5 1st gen use M12x1.5 lug bolts in the European convention. The 9-2X follows the Subaru side of its lineage on this, not the Saab side. There are wheel studs pressed into the hub, and you slide the wheel onto the studs before threading on the lug nuts.

Will Subaru Impreza WRX wheels fit a Saab 9-2X?

Yes, when sized for the same 2002-2007 GG-chassis WRX. The 9-2X Aero is mechanically a 2005-2006 Subaru Impreza WRX wagon, so any wheel that fits the base WRX of those years fits the 9-2X Aero. The 9-2X Linear is the base Impreza 2.5i wagon and the same wheels fit it. STI wheels (5x114.3, on the Subaru Impreza WRX STI of the same era) will NOT bolt onto the 9-2X because the bolt pattern is different. Stick with 5x100 wheels listed for the base 2005-2006 Subaru Impreza or Impreza WRX wagon.

Are Saab 9-2X wheels staggered?

No. The 9-2X is Subaru symmetric all wheel drive from the factory, on both the Aero and the Linear, and the symmetric AWD system requires matched circumference at all four corners. A staggered setup (wider rear than front) confuses the center differential and stresses the transfer case over miles. The Element catalog row for the 9-2X reflects this: matched front-rear width, no staggered option, matched front-rear brake.

What size wheels and tires came on the Saab 9-2X from the factory?

The 9-2X Linear shipped on 16 inch factory alloys with a 205/55 R16 tire. The 9-2X Aero shipped on 17 inch factory alloys with a 215/45 R17 tire, the same size as the matching 2005-2006 Subaru Impreza WRX wagon. Factory width is 6.5 inch on the Linear and 7 inch on the Aero.

Will wheels from a Saab 9-3 or 9-5 fit a Saab 9-2X?

No. The 9-3 and the 9-5 1st gen use 5x110 with a 65.1mm hub bore and M12x1.5 lug bolts. The 9-2X uses 5x100 with a 56.1mm hub bore and M12x1.25 lug nuts on studs. Different bolt pattern, different hub bore, different lug geometry. The 9-2X stays in the Subaru wheel pool, not the Saab wheel pool.

How do I find the right wheels for my specific Saab 9-2X?

Confirm your trim (Aero or Linear) and the bolt pattern (5x100, with a 56.1mm hub bore and M12x1.25 lug nuts). The aftermarket pool is essentially the 2005-2006 Subaru Impreza and Impreza WRX wagon (GG-chassis), which is much larger than the Saab badge alone suggests. Use our Year/Make/Model search to see wheels that fit your specific 9-2X and browse the wheel gallery for real-life builds. Every wheel we recommend is backed by the Fitment Guarantee.

Get Saab 9-2X Wheels Right the First Time

We measure on the 9-2X (and on the 2005-2006 Subaru Impreza WRX wagon that the 9-2X Aero is built from), confirm the 5x100 / 56.1mm / M12x1.25 lug nut geometry, and verify square fitment as the engineering constraint for Subaru symmetric AWD. Find your fit and start enjoying your build sooner.
