Subaru Legacy Aftermarket Wheel Fitment

The Subaru Legacy is the symmetric-all-wheel-drive sedan that sat at the center of Subaru's North American lineup for 35 years. The model launched as the 1st gen BC sedan and BJ wagon for the 1990 model year, ran through seven generations, and concluded with the final 7th gen BW (2020-2025). Subaru discontinued the Legacy in North America after the 2025 model year, so the BW is the last Legacy sold here. Element Wheels measures fitment across every Legacy generation we sell wheels for, from the 1st gen BC through the final BW. The bolt pattern history on the Legacy has one major transition to confirm before ordering. Every 1990-2014 Legacy (BC, BD, BE, BL, BM) ran 5x100 with a 56.1mm hub bore. Starting with the 6th gen BN (2015), Subaru moved the Legacy to 5x114.3 with the same 56.1mm hub bore. The final 7th gen BW (2020-2025) continued on 5x114.3. A 5x100 wheel from a 2014 or earlier Legacy will NOT bolt onto a 2015 or later Legacy. Confirm your model year before ordering. The Legacy and the Outback share their underlying platform (the Outback is the raised, all-terrain-body wagon version of the Legacy), so the bolt pattern transition happened in lockstep on both cars at 2015. Pick your generation below.

Find Your Subaru Legacy Generation

Pick your generation to see wheels and rims that fit your specific Legacy. The bolt pattern transition is the first thing to confirm: 1990-2014 Legacys run 5x100, and 2015-2025 Legacys (6th gen BN and 7th gen BW) run 5x114.3. Hub bore stays 56.1mm across every Legacy generation. AWD is standard on every Legacy, so square fitment is the default.

The Subaru Legacy Bolt Pattern, and the 2015 Switch

From the 1990 model year through 2014, every Subaru Legacy ran 5x100 with a 56.1mm hub bore. That covered the 1st gen BC (1990-1993), the 2nd gen BD (1994-1998), the 3rd gen BE (2000-2004), the 4th gen BL (2005-2009), and the 5th gen BM (2010-2014). 5x100 is the Subaru naturally-aspirated standard of that era, shared with the standard Impreza, Crosstrek, Forester, BR-Z, and the Outback wagon Subaru built on the Legacy platform.

The 6th gen BN Legacy (2015-2019) moved to 5x114.3 with the same 56.1mm hub bore. The Legacy and the Outback share their underlying platform, so the bolt pattern transition happened in lockstep on both cars at the 2015 model year. The final 7th gen BW Legacy (2020-2025) continued on 5x114.3 / 56.1mm. A 5x100 wheel from a 2014 or earlier Legacy will NOT bolt onto a 2015 or later Legacy. Confirm your model year before ordering. The 5x114.3 pattern is also written as 5x4.5 in imperial (114.3mm = 4.5 inches), but that imperial nickname refers ONLY to 5x114.3, not to 5x115. A wheel listed for 5x115 (Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger LX) will not bolt to a 2015 or later Legacy either.

The hub bore stays 56.1mm across every Legacy generation from 1990 forward, so the hub-fit geometry is consistent across the entire 35-year run even when the bolt pattern changes. One more detail specific to Subaru: the wheel lug thread on the Legacy is 12x1.25, not the 12x1.5 used on Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, and Kia. That thread pitch is consistent across every Legacy and every modern Subaru. Compare across the rest of the Subaru lineup at our Subaru wheels and rims hub.

Why Legacys Run Square Fitment

Every Legacy sold in North America since the 1st gen BC has been symmetric all-wheel-drive from the factory. Subaru uses a longitudinally-mounted boxer engine paired with a center differential and front-rear torque split. That drivetrain requires matched circumference at all four corners. A wheel and tire combo that is taller in the rear than the front (or vice versa) confuses the center diff and stresses the transfer case over miles. Square fitment is not optional on a Legacy, it is the engineering constraint. Element catalog rows for every Legacy generation reflect this: matched front-rear width and matched tire diameter across the range, no staggered option.

The brake package on the Legacy is matched front to rear across every generation. There is no front-larger-than-rear split the way there is on a WRX, STI, or a performance sedan like the Lexus IS 350. The Legacy is a family sedan with appropriately sized brakes for its mission, which keeps the aftermarket diameter window wide across the entire model run.

For your exact aftermarket offset, three options:

  • 1. Use our Year/Make/Model search to see wheels that fit your specific Legacy (each listing shows its own offset).
  • 2. Browse the Legacy wheel gallery for real-life builds with size, offset, and tire spec captions.
  • 3. Call or chat with our team for a free fitment consultation.

Every wheel we recommend is backed by our Fitment Guarantee. If a wheel does not fit, we pick up the wheels and refund 100 percent. No risk to you.

How We Confirm Fitment on Subaru Legacy Wheels

Element Wheels measures fitment on the platforms we sell wheels for, including every Legacy generation from the 1990 BC through the final BW. For the Legacy that means clearance from the wheel to the fender, gap between the back of the wheel and the suspension, brake caliper height, hub bore confirmation (56.1mm across every Legacy), lug seat geometry, the 12x1.25 thread confirmation, and confirmation that the wheel and tire match circumference front to rear so the symmetric AWD system stays happy. At our fitment facility in Chandler, Arizona, the Element Wheels team measures directly on the physical platforms we support. We don't pull specs from manufacturer sheets the way most retailers do.

Subaru Legacy Wheels and Rims FAQ

What is the bolt pattern on a Subaru Legacy?

5x100 on every Legacy from 1990 through 2014 (1st gen BC, 2nd gen BD, 3rd gen BE, 4th gen BL, 5th gen BM), switching to 5x114.3 on the 2015 and up Legacy (6th gen BN and final 7th gen BW). Hub bore is 56.1mm across every Legacy generation. The 5x100 to 5x114.3 transition on the Legacy happened in lockstep with the Outback 2015 transition, because the Outback is built on the Legacy platform.

Will my 2014 Legacy wheels fit a 2015 Legacy?

No. The bolt pattern changed for the 2015 model year. 1990-2014 Legacys run 5x100 with a 56.1mm hub bore. The 2015 and up Legacy (6th gen BN) runs 5x114.3 with the same 56.1mm hub bore. A 5x100 wheel from a 2014 or earlier Legacy will not bolt onto a 2015 or later Legacy. Confirm your model year before ordering.

Is the Legacy still produced?

No. Subaru discontinued the Legacy sedan in North America after the 2025 model year. The final-generation 7th gen BW (2020-2025) is the last Legacy sold in the US. We keep the Legacy hub published and fully measured because there are roughly 35 years of Legacys still on the road needing aftermarket wheel support. The Outback (the raised wagon version of the Legacy) is still in production.

Will Outback wheels fit a Subaru Legacy?

Bolt pattern crosses by year because the two cars share their platform. 5x100 / 56.1mm CB on every 1990-2014 Legacy and Outback, switching to 5x114.3 / 56.1mm CB on the 2015 and up Legacy and Outback. What differs is the ride height and the body. The Outback runs the raised ride height and the all-terrain body, so the fender clearance and offset window are different from a standard Legacy sedan. We measure each platform separately. Match the wheel listing to your specific Legacy year and body style.

Are Subaru Legacy wheels staggered?

No, and it cannot be. Every Legacy sold in North America is symmetric all-wheel-drive from the factory and the drivetrain requires matched circumference at all four corners. A staggered setup (wider rear than front, or larger rear diameter than front) confuses the center diff and stresses the transfer case over miles. Square fitment with matched tire diameter is the engineering constraint on a Legacy, not a stylistic choice.

What size wheels and tires came on the Legacy from the factory?

Factory sizes range from 14 inch steel wheels on the entry-level 1st gen BC trims up to 18 inch alloy on the higher trims of the 6th gen BN and 7th gen BW. Most modern Legacys shipped on 17 inch factory wheels with a 7-7.5 inch width. Sport and GT trims of the BN and BW ran 18 inch factory. The Legacy was a sedan with sensible factory sizing across its run, not built as a wide-wheel car at any point.

What is the largest wheel I can fit on a Subaru Legacy?

Our measured aftermarket window on every Legacy from the 2000 BE forward tops at 20 inch diameter. Most aftermarket Legacy upgrades land at 18 or 19 inch. On the early 1990s BC and BD Legacys the cap is 18 inch because the brake package, fender geometry, and factory sizing don't support the larger diameter. Confirm your generation before ordering.

Do I need hub centric rings on a Subaru Legacy?

Hub centric rings only when the aftermarket wheel has a centerbore larger than 56.1mm. If your fitment needs rings, they'll be included with the order.
