Datsun 280Z Aftermarket Wheel Fitment

The Datsun 280Z was the final iteration of the original S30-chassis Z car, produced 1975 through 1978. The 280Z followed the 240Z (1969-1973) and 260Z (1974) and closed out the S30 generation before the platform was replaced for 1979 by the larger S130 280ZX. Across all S30 Z cars, including the 280Z covered on this page, the wheels run 4x114.3 (4 lug imperial 4x4.5) with a 66.1mm hub bore and the Japanese M12x1.25 fine pitch lug thread. Four lugs, not five. That is unusual for a performance car of any era and it is the single most important spec to know before buying wheels. Aftermarket diameter on the 280Z runs from 14 inch up to 18 inch in our catalog, with 15 and 16 inch the most common choices on this body. Find the wheel and rim recommendations below.

Find Your Datsun 280Z Generation

The Datsun 280Z ran a single generation from 1975 through 1978 on the S30 chassis, the same underbody as the earlier 240Z and 260Z. Pick the year range to see wheels and rims that fit. If you own the later 280ZX (1979-1983), that car is on a different chassis (S130) and is not covered by this hub.

The Datsun 280Z Bolt Pattern

Every Datsun 280Z (1975-1978) uses 4x114.3 with a 66.1mm hub bore and M12x1.25 lug thread. Four lugs, not five. 4x114.3 has the imperial nickname 4x4.5 (114.3mm = 4.5 inches) and the two notations are identical. The lug count and the thread pitch are the two specs that trip people on this car. The S30 Z runs 4 lugs across all three iterations: 240Z, 260Z, and 280Z. The thread is M12x1.25, the Japanese fine pitch standard, not the M12x1.5 found on most American and European cars of the same era. A wheel that fits a 280Z will also fit a 240Z or 260Z because the entire S30 platform shares this bolt pattern, hub bore, and lug thread.

Important: 4x114.3 is not the same as 5x114.3. The bolt circle diameter is the same (4.5 inches across), but the lug count is different. A five lug wheel will not bolt to a four lug 280Z hub and a four lug 280Z wheel will not bolt to a five lug hub. Count the lugs on the hub before ordering. Also note: the later 280ZX (1979-1983) moved to a different chassis (S130) and a different bolt pattern. If your year is 1979 or later, you are not on the S30 280Z covered by this hub. Compare against the rest of the Datsun lineup at our Datsun wheels and rims hub.

Datsun 280Z Fitment Detail

The 280Z is a rear wheel drive two seat sports car on the S30 chassis. Despite the rear wheel drive layout, the 280Z runs square with matching wheel and tire sizes on every corner. Staggered fitment is not original to the car and is not standard practice on S30 builds. Most owners keep matching sizes front to rear because the S30 was engineered around symmetrical wheel sizing and the look stays period correct. Aftermarket diameter runs from 14 inch up to 18 inch in our measured window, with 15 and 16 inch the most common choices on this body. The 280Z's narrow fender openings and modest factory track mean very large diameters and very wide wheels work against the proportions of the car. The factory 280Z came with 14 inch steel and aluminum wheels.

How We Confirm Fitment on Datsun 280Z Wheels

Element Wheels measures fitment on the platforms we sell wheels for, including the S30 280Z. For the 280Z that means hub bore confirmation at 66.1mm, lug count confirmation at four (not five), lug thread confirmation at the Japanese M12x1.25 fine pitch, clearance from the wheel to the fender, gap between the back of the wheel and the suspension, brake clearance on the front, and turning clearance at full lock. At our fitment facility in Chandler, Arizona, the Element Wheels team measures directly on the physical platforms we support. We don't pull specs from manufacturer sheets the way most retailers do.

The S30 280Z is a vintage performance platform with a strong enthusiast aftermarket. The most common mistake we see on this car is the lug spec. Buyers ordering wheels for a 280Z occasionally pick five lug wheels assuming any 4.5 inch pattern matches, or pick wheels with M12x1.5 lug studs assuming standard American thread. Neither bolts to a 280Z. The car uses four lugs and the Japanese M12x1.25 thread. We confirm both before any wheel ships.

Datsun 280Z Wheels and Rims FAQ

What is the bolt pattern on a Datsun 280Z?

Every Datsun 280Z (1975-1978) uses 4x114.3 with a 66.1mm hub bore and the Japanese M12x1.25 fine pitch lug thread. Four lugs, not five. 4x114.3 has the imperial nickname 4x4.5 (114.3mm = 4.5 inches). The S30 chassis shares this bolt pattern, hub bore, and lug thread across the 240Z, 260Z, and 280Z.

Why is the 280Z a four lug car?

The S30 Z was engineered as a lightweight sports car using the four lug hub standard that was common on Japanese cars of the late 1960s and 1970s. The four lug spec stayed across the 240Z, 260Z, and 280Z. The 280ZX (1979-1983) on the S130 chassis moved to a different bolt pattern when the platform was redesigned. If you are buying wheels for a 1975-1978 280Z, expect four lugs. Five lug wheels do not bolt to this car.

Will 240Z or 260Z wheels fit my 280Z?

Pattern yes, fitment confirm. The 240Z (1969-1973), 260Z (1974), and 280Z (1975-1978) all sit on the S30 chassis and all share 4x114.3 / 66.1mm hub bore / M12x1.25 lug thread / 4 lug. The wheels bolt to the same hub. Fender geometry and brake clearance varied slightly across the years (the 280Z added federally mandated bumper geometry and other late S30 changes), so confirm the wheel was fit-tested on the 280Z specifically. The bolt pattern is the same across all S30 Z cars.

Is the 280Z the same as the 280ZX?

No. The 280Z (1975-1978) is the final S30-chassis Z car. The 280ZX (1979-1983) is a different model on the S130 chassis. Larger body, different suspension, different brake package, and a different bolt pattern. They look related and the names are close, but the wheels do not interchange. This hub only covers the 1975-1978 S30 280Z. If your car is a 1979 or newer 280ZX, look for the 280ZX hub instead.

Are Datsun 280Z wheels staggered?

No. The 280Z runs square with matching wheel and tire sizes on every corner. Staggered fitment was not original to the S30 and is not standard practice on this body. Most owners keep matching sizes front to rear. The car was engineered around symmetrical wheel sizing and that look stays period correct.

What size wheels came on the Datsun 280Z from the factory?

Factory wheels on the 280Z were 14 inch steel and aluminum, depending on trim and year. Element aftermarket coverage on the 280Z runs from 14 inch up to 18 inch, with 15 and 16 inch the most common choices on this body. 17 inch fits a more modern stance. 18 inch is the upper end of what works proportionate to the body without losing the period correct look.

What lug nut do I need for a Datsun 280Z?

The 280Z uses the M12x1.25 lug thread, the Japanese fine pitch standard. This is different from the M12x1.5 found on most American and European cars of the same era. If you are buying lug nuts separately from the wheels, confirm M12x1.25. The two thread pitches are not interchangeable and a 1.5 nut on a 1.25 stud will cross-thread and damage the stud.

Do I need hub centric rings on a Datsun 280Z?

Hub centric rings only when the aftermarket wheel has a centerbore larger than the 280Z's 66.1mm factory hub bore. If your fitment needs rings, they'll be included with the order.
