Why the AWD Challenger Needs a Higher Offset Than RWD

The AWD Challenger ships from the factory with a much higher offset wheel than the RWD version. To match the factory fender line, aftermarket wheels and rims on AWD generally need an offset of 40mm or higher. A 35mm offset on a 20x9 wheel fits, but is slightly aggressive and sticks out just a bit past the fender line. The bolt pattern is the same on RWD and AWD (5x115), so offset and width are the variables that change between platforms.

Offset is the distance between the wheel's mounting face and its centerline. A higher offset pulls the wheel inboard, tucking it under the fender. The AWD platform's factory geometry includes that higher offset built in. The 2017-2020 GT AWD ships at +55mm offset, the 2021-2023 GT AWD ships at +49mm. That puts the factory offset range materially higher than what the RWD Challenger ships with. Aftermarket wheels for AWD need to start at 40mm or above to match.

Common AWD Challenger Wheel and Rim Sizes

If looks are the priority, the 22x9 fills the fender more aggressively and gives the AWD Challenger a more dramatic visual stance than factory. If performance is the priority, the 20x9 typically delivers it with lighter wheel options, a wider performance tire selection at common pricing, and slightly better acceleration response.

Ride quality follows the same split. The 20x9 rides softer over rough roads. The 22x9 rides a bit firmer due to lower profile tires. Both work cleanly at 40mm offset or above. Outside that window the wheel either sticks past the fender or sits too deep to look right on the AWD platform.

AWD vs RWD Quick Comparison

AWD and RWD Challengers share the platform interface (bolt pattern, hub bore, lug thread) but diverge on offset and on whether stagger is allowed. The two platforms are not interchangeable for fitment purposes.

Wheels that fit RWD do not automatically fit AWD. The offset is the platform-level difference, and it is meaningful enough to send a wheel sticking past the fender or tucking too deep depending on which direction the mismatch runs.

The AWD platform is less familiar to general aftermarket retailers than the RWD platform, and the offset numbers that work on AWD are specific to AWD. The 40mm threshold is the practical line we measure. Below it, the wheel pokes past the fender on the AWD platform. At 40mm and above it sits cleanly inside the fender line.
