The Ford Mustang Bolt Pattern Across Seven Generations

The Mustang went through more bolt pattern transitions in the first thirty years than in the next thirty. The 1st and 2nd gen Mustangs (1964-1973) shipped in both 4 lug and 5 lug builds depending on year, trim, and whether it was a base car or a performance variant; the 4 lug builds ran 4x114.3 and the 5 lug builds ran 5x114.3. From 1974 through 1993, the Mustang II and the Fox-body ran 4x108 with a 63.36mm factory hub bore. From 1994 forward (SN95, S197, S550, S650) every Mustang uses 5x114.3 with a 70.5mm factory hub bore.

5x114.3 is also called 5x4.5 in imperial because 114.3mm equals 4.5 inches exactly. The 5x4.5 nickname refers specifically to 5x114.3 only; it does not apply to 5x115, which is a distinct bolt pattern. The Mustang shares its 5x114.3 dimension with most modern Japanese sedans and crossovers, but hub bore, offset range, and brake clearance are different car by car, so a wheel that fits a Honda will not necessarily fit a Mustang even though the studs line up. Why the S550 Brake Package Matters for Wheel Buying

The 2015 S550 is the biggest fitment shift in modern Mustang history. Ford finally moved the Mustang to independent rear suspension after fifty years of solid axle, the GT shipped 19 inch wheels from the factory, and Ford expanded the brake-package menu in a way that changed how the aftermarket has to size wheels. On the S550 we track five distinct brake variants: V6/Eco with 2 piston brakes, Eco/5.0 with 4 piston brakes, 5.0 Brembo with 6 piston brakes, Shelby GT350 / GT350R, and Shelby GT500. Each one accepts a different inner clearance window because the caliper height differs across packages.

The S650 in 2024 carries the same playbook forward with V6/Eco 2 piston, Eco/5.0 4 piston, 5.0 Brembo 6 piston, and Dark Horse 6 piston brake variants. If you do not match the wheel to the brake package, the wheel will either rub the Brembo caliper or sit too far inset to look right. We measure clearance directly on each brake-package variant because the spec sheet alone will not tell you that a 6 piston Brembo caliper sits closer to the wheel face than a 4 piston caliper does.
